TAUMARUNUI PROSPECTS LIKELY FAVOURITES SCHOOLING AT ELLEKSLIE. (‘'Times” Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, December 3. l’he Lucknow gelding Cawnpore, iwho has been racing in Australia, is back again with E. Gilchrist’s team at EUerslie. Cawnpore ran several good races in Sydney, but was not quite good enough for the best sprinting class. He is capable of paying his way when thoroughly right at distances up to a mile. With the appearance of the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap weights, the big EUerslie events are being freely discussed and after the Waipa meeting next week matters will become very interesting at headquarters, where the tracks are now in first-class order. Clockwork, Larry, Stellatown, Queen Emerald and Peter Anians have been schooled during the week, the only one to impress being Peter Amans, who fenced in his usual proficient manner. W. Fielding, who suffered a broken pelvis bone when Tres Bon fell at the Waikato Hunt meeting, has left the Waikato Hospital and will shortly resume riding. E. W T arner, who broke his leg when Kawa fell at Thames, is now making satisfactory progress, after a slow recovery in the early stages of the treatment. J. Williamson's latest recruit is a young horse by Adjutant. He will need a lot of conditioning before being ready to race. ' R. E. Brown intended taking four horses to Taumarunui, hut the injury to Boomerday caused his withdrawal, and Brown will be represented by Tino Mangu, Gala Day and Abbey Day. Abbess showed sufficient speed in her only outing at Te Rapa to suggest that she will be hard to beat in any event sbe contests at Taumarun ui. The hunter, Ngabinepourl, is also on the up-grade and he may cause the hurdlers a lot of trouble at Taumnrunui. If Abbess starts in the Trial Plate sbe may be favourite with Master Mind and Bright Comet also in demand. Te Koroke and -Toy Germ read nicely in the Taringamotu Handicap. In the other events the following may lind favour: Cup, ,Spoony and Passionate; Malapuna Handicap, Green Bonnet and Abbess; Matiere Handicap, Te Koroke and Always; Rangaroa Handicap, Miss Egypt and Miss Vera ; Owhnngo Handicap, Ngarara and Liglitwood.
NOTES FROMWANGANUI REVIEW OF RECENT RACING CONTESTANTS AT AUCKLAND MEETING, (“Times” Correspondent.) WANGANUI, December S. Glenross was much fancied by both bis owner, \V. Me. A. Duncan, and trainer, I'. Tilley, for the Feiluing Cup, in which event he looked the winner half a mile from home, but he was steadied and afterwards would not gallop with his usual freedom. On the second day he was allowed to run along, and this made all the difference to him, as he won all the way. Though Lysander has been paid up for in the Great Northern Guineas it is doubtful whether he will start in that event. If the going is firm on the day he. might be given a run. Civility was in Feilding and in splendid shape, but in view of the sticky state of the going it was wisely decided not to start her in her engagements. It is probable she will be taken to Auckland for the Railway Handicap, in which with 8.6 she is nicely weighted. Recently she ran sis furlongs on the track in 1.144, so it is evident that she has not lost any of her brilliancy through being laced over longer distances. Tukia is engaged in the Railway at Ellerslie, but it is probable she will be taken to Awapuni and Marton instead of going north. At present it is F. Tillev’s intention to take Limited, Ruanui and Mandane to Auckland. Prior to the weights appearing it was said that Mandane was likely to be kept lor some of the shorter distance events, and not started in the Clip. However, with 7.8 she is well treated in the two-mile event, and a. change of plans may be decided upon. On liis showing in the Feilding Stakes, Limited must run well in the Railway Handicap, in which ho has 7.11. Ho should he all the better for Tuesday’s race, and .if the going is firm at Ellerslie such a quick beginner must be dangerous. It was a good performance on tho part of The Thorn to run fourth in the Feilding Stakes, as he is not yet tuned up. The soil of Absurd-Rose Queen is likely to be much improved by Christmas, and he should run prominently in his engagements at Ellerslie, He is nicely treated in the Railway with 7.8, but it is doubtful if he is smart enough off the mark for that event, though he promised to ho better than ever this season over slightly longer distances. The conditions were all against Deluge at Feilding, and it was not surprising to find him among the unplaced division. He should bo about at his best at Christmas, and he looks to be very favourably treated on his best track form in the Railway with 7.12. Mask continues to do good work, and Geo. Currie has been given every encouragement to start him in the Auckland Cup, in which he has 8.0. The two-year-old Thaw, was unfortunate at Feilding in tho Nursery Handicap, as he whip lied round at tho start and lost so much ground that no idea could he formed as to his ability. The Maiden Race at last Wanganui Cup meeting was run oyer five furlongs, and the distance for this event next February has been increased to six furlongs. At a meeting of the committee of tho Taranaki .Tockev Club, the programme for the February meeting was anprnved, and it was derided to give the same amounts in stakes as last
year. The distances in on© or two races have tr> be modified in order to • conform with the Rules of Racing. The Nursery Handicap is to be extended to two and three-year-olds in place of two-year-olds as formerly. It was decided to substitute re-handicap-ping for fixed penalties.
