A CASTLE OF TRAGEDY

Saltwood Castle, which has jurt changed hands, has for its meet prominent event the tragedy of Becket, who claimed it for the Church. It was on the night of December 28tli, 1170, that the conspirators against Docket's life met to arrange the murder in a room at Saltwood Castle. The old legend tells that the lights were extinguished in order that none of tho conspirators might see the faces of his fellows during the actual planning of the murder. The castle was restored to the See of Canterbury by King John, and the archbishops sometimes lived there down to the time of Cranmer.
