THE FAIRY-RING

Bonnie, Beloved Bairns,— Believe me, I’ve been busy and bewildered by the billions of B*s! Bushels buzzed in, but some were blunders that baffled my brains’ best efforts. Briefly, we’ve bestowed the “bouquets” on the three whose B’s were best and most bountiful. Blessings on you all* From CHEERIEL. P.S.^—There’s a queer competition this week. I wonder bow you’ll like it? It’ll set you all sniffing! P.S.S.—Do you see we’ve got another auntie in our Fairy Ring? iiiimmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiHHimiiiiiiiiiiiiHmiiiiiiiHiiimuiiiUMimiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiim Dear Little People,— The Zoo here is a wonderful place—a picture out of a storybook steps and terraces and rock gardens, splashes of flowers, pools of shadow, and down and away between the trees the blue, blue harbour stretching .... Monkeys leap and chatter and swing over the great rocks. Ostriches strut grand on their stiff pink legs. Polar bears sit and rock and wail because they see the water so near, and so cool, so blue they look like big old unhappy snowmen that have happened in summer by mistake. There’s an elephant to ride on—and round any corner you might meet the baby one face to face. He’s ever so shy, and keeps close to his keeper. But perhaps the loveliest thing of all is the little enchanted pool just inside the gate—a little pool of swaying reeds and waterlilies where every small breeze lingers. Yours, FAIRIEL.

Bessie Percy, -Alfredton.—All th© roses are looking lovely now. What coloured ones do you like best ? Does Dinks behave well with vou, and how far do you have to ride to school ? Don Martin, St. Alban’s, Christchurch.—A well-written list, Don., but there were some you didn’t see 1 Did Dick help you hunt? Ivy McGhie, Chance Along, Upper Hutt.—Well ivy, we wer.e wondering if you were ever going to chance along this wav again ? But I believe you’ve been sitting on your mushroom all the time, listening! . . . It’B queer about you and Claudia both having a Sneckly doing the. same thing! I’ve put your birthday down in the book, but I wish you had told us in time! Tell us some more about the baby. We’ro all glad to have one of our oldest fairies back again! Something rosy and sweet, and something pretty and green came out of your letter. Margaret Verschaffelt, Wellington.— You found a lot of B’s and wrote them out beautifully, little six years old. Are you going to be one of our wee fairies ? Kathleen Williams, Wadeslgnvn. We were expecting a letter from you, Kathleen ! To be dressed as a Spanish girl first and then as a man will keep you busy on the night of the school concert. It was a pity you scratched out “barrel.” Dick Martin, Christchurch.—That’s an awfully funny picture, Dick, and the Ring would love to see it, but I don’t know if they can because it’s not done in ink. But we’ll try. It’s a brave little bantam, defending the “girls!” I did laugh! Betty Johnson, Kilbirnie.—Yes, come along little new fairy! Did you notice we have another fairy with a name very like yours? Its beautiful print writing you’vo done. I was just going to ask who Mollie was when I opened her letter! Mollie Harris, Kelburn—Oh, Mollie, I’ve been wondering when you, were coming! . . Tell us what dances you and Betty are going to do at the school concert? ... I liked all those things you put at the end, and I’m going to look out for a little girl just like the one you drew. !’i c ie Mason. Wellington.—lt’s a good tiling you got the mumps well over before that lovely Christmas dinner, t shall choose fruit salad, I think, instead of plum pudding. Lilly Gwillim, Island Bay.—Yes, Lily, it was time you wrote again! Look o-ut for the riddle soon, and tell us about “ghosts.” Betty Simmis, Petone.—Your tiger lily i 9 out very early, Betty. It’s a nuisance the weeds grow as fast as the flowers, isn’t it? Bruce Harris, Kelburn —The new drawing will come out best of all, Bruce. And I laughed at those names, too . . . but I don’t think the first one fits very well. Esma Costello. Newtown.—Our fairies have to read the pages every week so thev know what’s going on. Aud we like them to write ouite often, and tell us what they’re doing. Some of them do write every week, but you don’t have to do it, dear, unless you want to. Aubrey Marsh, Berha-mpore—l can’t find your name on our list-, Aubrey. Are you one of our elves? Mollie Holland, Martinborougb.—Goodness, Mollie, what a busy auntie you have with twelve little hoys and girls of her own! Are they near enough for you to have lots of fun playing with them, and helping to mind them? Or are you too bu6y with yours? Wish the twins a happy birthday. Poggv Cook, Island Bay—Well. Pfcggy, T think we all felt like you did about the weather last week. Its grand having finished the exams. I’m sure our “tomboy” is going to enjoy herself more than ever now. Joan Purvis. Island Bay.—lt’s a good list, Joan! Alfred Lund, Mnrima, Mangamaire.— You found Monty’s hoots quite right, Alfred, and you had a good try at the B’s too ! Isn’t there some beautiful bush near where you live? Toll us about it, please! Zena Cunningham, Petone.—We’re glad you are coming Zena, All those 1 chicks and ducks make a big family. Who looked after them when you had the flu? Mollie Winter, Okehu, Maxwelltown.— Fo you’re an auntie, too, little fairy of ten years old. Tell us some more about your nephew who is six and a half, and your niece who is two and a bit. You began being an auntie even younger than Pearl Berry. Joan Urquhart, Karori.—l can’t think how the little fay got mixed up last week, but everyone knew j’ou were the Christmas tree, because J. Urquhart, Spiers street, was there underneath. Connie Shortland, Matamau. There won’t he much school left if it doesn’t start again soon, will there? Dl have to turn into a private detective and hunt . after what’s missing. AVlicro can it have got to? And so many letters came in that the late ones will have to wait till next week for their answers. Here are the names:—Mary McQueen, Jean McQueen, Harvey Grapes, Joy Cook, Amy Johnson, H. McLean) Delzio Stocklcy Jones.
