“BACK TO THE HOME” CRY
WOMEN CROWDING THE LABOUR MARKET competincTwith men. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. December 1. “There are too many girls and women competing against men,” was the emphatic declaration of Dr Fenton, medical officer for Kensington. He included girl typists and shop assistants, saying that their proper place was domestic service. If they cleared out, men’s conditions and earnings would be vastly improved, and they would be opening up wider opportunities for marriage, which was unquestionably the happiest state of existence. This would remove from the labour market thousands of women, while the increased earnings of married men would make it possible to employ. domestic assistance.. Furthermore, he said, domestic work was better for girls than typing, selling stockings, or packing pickles.
