“NOT HALF SO BAD"

WORD TO PESSIMISTS ON HOSPITAL EXPENDITURE. A word of sound advice to the pessimist was given by the Minister for Health (Hon. Mr Young) yesterday when laying the foundation-stone of the additions to the Wellington Hospital. He referred to those who saw nothing bright in the bad time through which the country was passing at the moment. “I am not a pessimist,” he said, “for the pessimist is tile man who sees an obstacle in every opportunity. If we find there is an obstacle we have

to find a vtny of surmounting it. We are only passing through a short phase of depression. We can learn our lesson out of it, and it gives us heart and courage to carry on.” This statement was made during the explanation that while hospital expenditure had naturally showed an increase over the preceding year owing to the increase in institutions and beds, it was satisfactory to note that the fees received showed a proportionately greater increase, and charitable aid expenditure had dropped some £12,000. This, the Minister contended, was striking testimony that, things were not half as bad ns some people would have the community believe.
