Luok was against the Feilding Club for its recent meeting, and, with such bad weather a big fall in receipts was almost inevitable. It seemed, however, that the. club was unfortunate in the selection of its race days. It is difficult to see how a Tuesday and a Wednesday can commend themselves as raoe days, and it seemed that better results would be obtained from racing on (say) a Saturday and a Monday. As Gauntlet looked a distinct possibility in the hurdles at Feilding ion Tuesday it is surprising that he paid a double-figure dividend. He ran on more solidly than he did when he won at Levin, and. on his latest showing, there are further jumping successes ahead of him. . The weather was so unpromising at the closo of Tuesday that Koauau’s owner decided not to pay up for his horse m the hurdles at Feilding on Wednesday. He was persuaded to change his mind, and Koauau met a field so weak that the stake was almost .a present for him. He managed tiie going w*ll, and won jery easily. Nukumai ran a great race i n the hurdles at Feilding on Tuesday. He humped 12st 111 b through very sticky going, and approaching the straight it looked as if lie would win. But in the run homo from the last ' fence he found it quite impossible to concede Gauntlet 441 b and beat him. Mimetic was looking well at Feilding, and should he at his best in a few weeks’ time. Merry Day finished very fast each day at Feilding. Her final run is still one of the best that is unwound ;n middle-distance races. Diogenes won the Feilding Cup better than he won the Levin Cup. He is a good horse in bad ground, and is improving so much that.from now oil ‘.is can be looked to to hold liis own under any conditions. He might be taken to Ellerslie for the Auckland Cup, and with 7st 31b he will have to be considered. ‘ • Euphonium never looked as well as he did on Tuesday, and he was well fancied for the Feilding Cup, but he had no chance from soon after the Start. He failed to jump away smartly. and, during the race, was never going freely. .Indian Sage had every chance in the Feilding Cup, and his finishing effort was very disappointing. On the second day'of the meeting the going was somewhat. similar to the track conditions under which he. won so easily at.iOtaki yet he failed again. Elysianor was costly to his admirers at Feilding. He failed over seven furlongs on Tuesday after having, every chance, and it seemed bad play to back him over a longer journey on the Wednesday. * Sheer quality won the Feilding Stakes for Grand Knight. Limited, Tamatete, and Lady Cavendish wero well clear of . him in the run to the straight, but he managed to work up to within striking distance at the bottom of the straight. When he struck he did so with his customary determination, and the leaders were unable to put up a fight against him. It was good to see the honours go to the English horse, as he is something above a mere sprinter. Nino of Spades was fancied at Feilding, but he disappointed. Lady Cavendish looked nice at Feilding, and though defeated in the Stakes she ' ran a good race, and should be,at her best at Christmas time. The Lamb is all right, but- lie could not manage the going at Feilding. Alaric is reported to have changed hands for £IOO at Feilding, and it’is understood the new owner is Mr C. McKay. Mr H. Spratt is understood to have disposed of Roman at Feilding for a nominal consideration. In future Roman might be trained in the Manawatu. Eka had been showing some pace on the Hawera course, but was very greeto, and when she won on Wednesday only 69 tickets were invested on lieT chances. She just squeezed home in a weak field, but looks open to much improvement. Glqfcross made an exhibition of the field in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding, going to the front at the start, never relinquishing the lead, and winning as he liked at the finish. The rain which had fallen overnight made the track to his liking, and he carried his 9.2, as though it were a featherweight. i Kept on. the course at the home turn Ruanui would have won at Feilding on Wednesday. Ruanui was beaten by a length and a half, but lost far more than that on the turn. Negotiations for the sale of Seatown iiave been proceeding’ for some time, and when they are completed Seatown might go into one of the Dominion’s leading stables. Monoghan scored the easiest win of the Feilding meeting when he led the field home in the last: race of the meeting. The Bisogne gelding showed that he is a very useful galloper over seven furlongs, and that a wet course does not deter him. H. and A. Cutts have what the Christchurch “Press” refers to as a strong team in active commission at Riccarton, including Centrepiece, Front Rank, Wild Work, Card Trick, Serotina, and Dark Spot, and the stable will be well represented at the South Canterbury and Dunedin meetings. It was intended to send Centrepiece to Auckland at Christmas time, but nothing has as yet been decided upon in regard to In's movements at that time. Taboo’s track £asks have been of a light order during the past week owing to his suffering from injuries to one of his legs, caused through becoming entangled with a wire fence. He is making a speedy recovery and should be in good order for the Timaru meeting. Margaret Birney, one of the favoured . candidates for next Saturday’s Methven Cup, was responsible for a serviceable gallop at II i c car ton on Tuesday, covering nine liirlougs in 1.37 2-3. She was assisted over six furlongs by Horn tins, who, however,
was unable to pace it with, her over the finishing stages. Tiie ex-Ricearton horseman, R. H. Burns, who is .now domiciled at Invercargill, was injured wlnle out shooting on Monday, and had to be removed to hospital. . Nincompoop showed a marked turn of speed at Riccarton on Tuesday when lie led Precious home after a five furlong flutter on the plough, accomplished in 1.3 Both will be raced at Methven and Timaru, and' there is a probability of their being taken to the Manawatu and Marton holiday meetings. MANAWATU^SUMMER MEETING For the Manawatu summer races, to be held on December 27th, 28th, and 30th, nominations will close at, 9 p.m. to-day; also forfeit of 1 sov. for the 21st Palmerston . North Stakes. WAIRARAPA RACES Nominations for the New Tear meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club (January Ist and 3rd) close next Friday. . ...
