TROTTING
AUCKLAND CLUB THE HANDICAPS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, De-comber 2. The following handicaps have been declared for the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting:— INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, Of 400 sovs; 3.45 clas6; one mile and a half.
WELLINGTON CLUB ACCEPTANCES CLOSE TO-NIGHT. Acceptances for the first day’s events at the 'Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close with the secretary, Mr R. W. Short, Petone, at 8 o’clock to-niight. The principal event on the first day is the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup, and present indications are that a record field will face the starter. Mr J. W. Frizzell’s gelding Tom Thumb is being selected in the south as a hard nut to crack. He has certainly not been harshly dealt with, as he is on the limit in a 4.36 class. At the Metropolitan August meeting he was set to give Holly Boy 48 yards, but got interfered with at the start. He is now 'receiving 12 yardß from Holly Boy. The latter, however, is on the improve,-and though a difference of sixty yards since they last met looks a severe penalty he may worry Tom Thumb at the end of a strongly run two miles. Last year’s winner, llolly Billon is favourably placed on 72 yards behind, as also are Bing Boy on 48 yards, and Silk Thread on 36 yards, and the winner may possibly come from this division. Taurekareka’s speed is not to be questioned, but lie lias yet to prove himself- over a solid two mile journey. He will, however, havo the services of “Scotty” Bryce to help him out. Brentloc is another speedy pacer that has been definitely adjudged a 11011-stayer by the handieapper. On the 12 yards mark he should not have to extend "himself to maintain good position over the first part of the journey. D. Wither’s team for the meeting will consist of the champion Great Bingen, Acron, Tranipcrisp (n recent importation from America), and Peter Swift. . R. E. Mills’s team includes the now aspirant for the title of New Zealand champion, PrinCe- Pointer, and the game old battler Whispering Willie. The latter is well known to patrons , of the Hutt pwi-k, having beaten a
good field of pacers in the Gold Cup of 1917. Whispering Willie earned his first place money at a meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, held at the Recreation Ground, Petone, in 1915, when, in an old-fashioned high sulky, he ran second to All Steel (saddle) m the Petone Handicap. He was then a four-year-old, which makes the game little trotter to be now in his sixteenth year. To find him now the back-marker in the High Class Trotters’ Handicap is a wonderful illustration of the stamina of the trotting bred horse. Sea Petarl will be a competitor in the Gold Cup, and would be hard to dispose of if at her best. Mr McMillan’s mare, however, has not raced since the August meeting at Addington, and may be just a little backward to concede the 72 yards handioap set opposite her name. Siport lovers- of Wellington will have an exceptional opportunity of seeing exactly what high class trotting is when the champions of New Zealand measure strides in the Electric Handioap on the first day, and the Champions’ Stakes on the second day. The meeting of Great Bingen and Prince Pointer should alone be worth n long pilgrimage to witness. It is contests such as this that raise the 6port to something more than mere competition for stake money, and the Wellington Trotting Club is deserving of every success lor its enterprise.
