BOXING
TO* NIGHT’S TOURNAMENT PURDY AND McCarthy. Standing room only appears likely to be the order when proceedings commence at to-night's boxing tournament. Particular interest centres* in the meeting between Purdy and McCarthy. In his contest with Jaroitu, the latter demonstrated himself to be one of the neatest boxers and hardest hitters seen in Wellington for some time, and it was only the well-known ability of the Filipino to take punishment which prolonged the bout- to the scheduled numfcer of rounds. Despite the record opponent. Purdv is confident of making a good showing, and with his adoption in recent contests of more vigorous methods, a contest characterised by an exchange of hard knocks should be seen. With what promises to be four excellent nreliminaries this, the last tournament of a record season, should provide an evening’s entertainment equal to any promoted during the season. Intending patrons are asked to note that the box plan will close this afternoon at 4 o’clock, and those who have not already secured their seats will he well advised to <lo so without delay.
