FEILDING SPRING RACES

SECOND DAY EVENTS DECIDED IN BLEAK, WET WEATHER GLENROSS WINS FROM END TO END ROYAL DAMON SCORES VERY EASY VICTORY OVER SPRINTERS (By “Carbine.”) . \ * PALMERSTON, NORTH, .December i. The Feilding summer races were concluded to-day in wintry weather. The.day was bleak and wet, and the course was in a very sloppy state. Flags were at half-mast, out of respect to the memory of Mr W. Haybittle, who passed away at Wellington. Mr Haybittle was a very old resident of the district, and for years was a prominent member of the Feilding Jockey Club. The St. Andrew’s Handicap was won easily by Glenross, and Royal Damon beat the sprinters in simple fashion.

FAVOURITE WINS HURDLES The withdrawal of Enare from the Cheltenham Hurdles left only five to contest the race, and of these Koauau was a short-priced favourite. Sir Pam made the early running, with Koauau in the rear, but - five furlongs from home Koauau was up in second place, and as Sir Pam began to tire a little later it became evident that the favourite only had to stand up to win. Koauau was in front at the last fence and in the run home won by a length and a-lialf. Bcnecto was a long way back third, and Roman was fourth. Powhiri and Molto were the favourites for the Novice Stakes, but bo,th of them were well beaten at the finish. Molto got away well and led out from Eka and Takaroa, but crossing the top Truney was in charge from Eka, Molto, Lady Cynthia. Powhiri and Takaroa. Takaroa. and Elicit fell on the bend approaching the straight at about the same place where the falls .occurred on the .first dav...Truney led into the straight with a small lead of Eka and Lady Cynthia. Eka and Lady Cynthia fought out the finish, and Eka, saved for a final “dab,” won by a head. Molto was a poor third, Truney fourth. Petal fifth and Powhiri sixth. The riders of the fallen horses, Mackie and Trillo, were not injured. They returned to the bird cage covered; in mud and smiles. | GLENROSS ALL THE WAY ■ As the going, though more sloppy, was not so sticky as on the previous day, the top weight, Glenross, was sent out favourite for the St. Andrews Handicap, and Indian Sage and Killoch were better hacked than any of the others. Several of the field were had at the post, and Indian Sage and Joy Bird got away badly. Glenross began well under his big weight, and was immediately taken to the front, leading through, the straight the |first time from Glengariff, Kilfaire, Hipo, Killoch, Joy Bird, Merry Day and Indian Sage. Down the back Glenross was howling along at the head of affairs going quite comfortably, and next to him were Kilfaire and Glengariff, with Indian Sage and Merry Day tailing the field. Glenross led acToss the top and into the straight from Kilfaire and Glengariff, with Hipo and Jov Bird nicely placed among the others. Once the - final run was undertaken Glenross drew away and a hundred yards off the nost was several lengths in front. He was eased and then won by a couple of lengths from Joy Bird, who was a neck to the good of Merry Day. who. as usual, finished very fast. Kilfaire was fourth, Killoch and Indian Sage next, and then Hipo. Joy Bird bolted a mile before the start of the race. WARM FAVOURITE GOES UNDER A warm favourite was beaten in the Oroua Nursery Handicap when Ruanui went under ;to a son of that good mare - Silver Link. Insulation threw his rider before the start, and was troublesome at the harrier. Thaw got the worst of the dispatch, being hopelessly left, Tom Bracken caught- the jump out, and led in the early stages from Osjcillation and Ruanui. Ruanui ran past iOscillation crossing the top, and was iwith Tom Bracken at the turn into the straight. The pair oame out very tfide, Ruanui being on.the outside of Tom Bracken. Ruanui soon settled Tom Bracken, but Silvermine got through on the fence, and finishing well won by a length and a half from Ruanui, who beat Tom Bracken by a couple of lengths. Next came Miss Mercia, Panther. Oscillation, Insulation, and Shrewd. Plain Sailing was among the withdrawals from the Nikau Hack Handicap, and Sovena, Cerf, and Volplane were the' l best backed of the field. Volplane, who was well drawn at the barrier, began well, and with Sovena led along the back. Crossing the top the pair were still in charge, and Sovena was doing it the hotter of the pair. Volplane was practically done with at the bottom of the straight, and in the run home Merle challenged Sovena, but the latter won by* half a length. Volplane was three ' lengths back third. Tip Tree was fourth, Wilderness fifth, and Quillfire sixth. A SIMPLE VICTORY Several horses were well backed in the Colyton Handicap, among them Inferno, Gold Box, and Nine of Spades. First Acre led along the back and across the top when Royal Damon was well back in fourth place. Nine of Spades led into the straight, but Royal Damon soon gathered the field, and came right away to win by three lengths from Nine of Spades, who was five lengths ahead of First Acre. Gold Box was fourth. Despite his failure on the first day Elysianor was made favourite for the Rongotea Hack Handicap, and was much better backeck than Sea Star

and Lady Anstruther. Sea Star and Conviction led through the straight and into the hack from Resinous, with Lady Anstruther next. Crossing the top Resinous was in the van with Sea Star, Elysianor and Lady Anstruther following closely. Resinous came out wide at the home turn, and Lady Anstruther accepting the opening on the rails was soon in front, and went on to win by three-quarters of a length. Elysianor was six lengths away third, and Conviction was fourth. Several horses were evenly backed in the Empire Handicap, Monaghan being supported with a little more confidence than most of the others. The race was an easy one for Monaghan, who was well clear going along the back, and led aorqss the top from Peneus, with' Bonogne making up ground steadily. Monaghan was first into the straight, and she went on to win by five lengths from Peneus, who beat Bonogne by a short neck, with Aeriform finishing fast alongside Bonogne, and Kilmiss fifth. . TAKAPUNA RACES PRINCESS RONNIE SCORES SPRINT TcTIORNA DOON. (By Telegraph.—Special to '‘Times.") AUCKLAND,' December 1. The weather wae beautiful for the concluding day at Takapuna, but the track was still heavy. Red flags were placed several feet out from, the rails around the bend, and along the top, to keep the horses out from the bad ground near the rails. Boomerday had hie right eye knocked out during the running of the St. Andrew's Handicap. The totalisator figures for the day were £40,357 10e, as against £46,506 last spring—a decrease of £6148 10s. The meeting total was. £82,806 10s, as against £108,926 10s, a decrease. of '£26,120. BAHAMA GETS HOME The bracket, Bahama and Waitekohe, was better fancied than Cantab in the Vauxhall Handicap. Bahama began well from near the rails, and with half the journey covered he led Cantab, Harbour View, Abbey Day, Te Kawana, Arch Queen, and Anolo. He was still clear of Cantab as they entered the straight with Abbey Day, Harbour View, and Anolo in a bunch next.' Anolo came fast in the straight, but Bahama hung on to beat him by a length and a half, with Harbour View two lengths away, third, followed by Waitekohe, Cantab, and Queen Rewa. Anolo was badly placed early and finished very rapidly, but Bahama was always doing it nicely in front. Waitekohe, bracketed with the winner, did well to get fourth from a bad position. >. ... Royal Form was a sound favourite for the Kawau Highweight Handicap, with Passionate next in demand. Fair Abbey and Pentagram made the early* running, but Kamehameha led along the back from Pentagram,-Fair Abbey, Royal Form, and Passionate. Royal Form took charge crossing the, top, and was well clear at the home turn from Fair Abbey and Kamehameha. Royal Form went on to win easily ? by threequarters of a length from Kamehameha and Fair Abbey, who dead-heated!., for second place; and then at intervals were Sea Comet, Black Cruiser, add P.entagram. The favourite looked better for his first day's run, and won with a good deal in hand.. FAVOURITE WINS EASILY Archeno was a better fancy than Maveelish for the tSanley Handicap. When they reached the back Bizarro, Luxurious, Judge's Box, and Newbury were leading a compact field. Judge's Box fell, and Bizarro and Luxurious were leading across the top from Archeno and • Maveelish, but nearing .the turn Archeno came right away from Luxurious and Maveelish and went on to win easing up by two lengths from Maveelish, who beat Luxurious by a 6hort head.. The next lot to finish were Valkon, Bizarro, and Newbury Archeno went well ana had a lot to 6pare. Newbufy altogether failed to handle the going. - Valkon may also do better on top of the ground, as he ran his race in patches. Ruffles was a warm favourite for the Cautley Handicap, with Archeen and Nancy Lee also well backed. Archeen and Tutankhamen led- along the back from Nancy Lee with Hoariri, the favourite having been cut back at the start. Archeen and Tutankhamen were still the leaders at the top,. where Ruffles had run up third, on the rails and King Merv and Nancy Lee were, heading the others. Archeen led round/the turn from Ruffles, Tutankhamen and-King Merv, but the favourite finished brilliantly and beat King Sferv by two lengths. Archeen was three-quarters of a length away, and then came Tutankhamen, Hoariri, Napcy Lee, and Pavo. Ruffles registered a fine performance as he was last early, but displayed great speed in the run home. ' After the leading four the others were’ a long way back. Nancy Lee-failed aftet Raving every chance. / PRINCESS RONNIE ALL THE WAY Ruapapa, Nippy and. Mosaic were backed in that order for. the St. Andrew's Handicap. From an uneven start, in which Nippy and Mosaic were badly left, Princess Ronnie and Charlady lea out of the straight, the latter taking up the running * along the back from Queen Arch, Princess Ronnie, Master Doon, Aurumavis, Transformer, Mosaic and Ruapapa. Charlady, Princess Ronnie,. Aurumavis 1 and Mosaic were the leading division, across the top, with Ruapapa coming from the middle of the field. Princess Ronnie was clear of Charlady and Aurumavis at the home turn, with'Ruapapa making a fast run. The favourite finished in great style, but failed to reach Princess Ronnie, who won by a length. . Charlady was half a length away third, and then came Aurumavis, Mosaic, Master Doon and Nippy, Nippy and Mosaic ran splendid races after feeing badly left, and would have been in the money with an even dispatch. Ruapapa also had a lot of ground to make uj> and was unlucky in being badly placed- early. High Finance was a slightly better favourite than Lorna Doon for the Rakino Handicap. From.a beautiful start Lorna Doon went out to -lead across the top from Arihana, High Finance, and Exalted. In this order they reached the turn, Lorna Doon going on to win easing up by two lengths from Auriculus, with‘Arihana three lengths away third, and High Finance and Exalted next. The winner is a very, smart and wellgrown youngster, who outclassed the others. High Finance failed to finish on after being handy, at the turn. EASY FOR DELIGHTMENT Golden Krist and Deliglitinent monoSilised the betting on the Pupuke Hack andicap. • Schorr, Quinsilia and Star Comet raced in that order for most of the journej', Golden, Krist and Delightinept closing up after passing the half uiile post. At the honie turn Schorr, Golden Krist and'Delightment were in a' the last-named shooting out at the distance'to win decisively by two lengths from Schorr Who. beat Golden Krist by a neck, with Quinsilia, Star Comet and Salamander following at intervals. The winner ran wide round the first turn, but was much too classy for his opponents. . • Schorr had all. the best-of the running, but was not good enough. True Blood was another hpt favourite for the Ngataringa Handicap, with Ring the Bell next in request. When they settled down Namutcre led Muscari, True Blood and-Arch Amie, but at the top Prince Abbey had taken charge from True Blood, Natautere and Arch Amie. True Blood led round the turn from Arch Amie, Aurumavis and Archibald. Clearing out in the straight True Blood won easing up by five lengths from Aurumavis, who beat Arch Amie by two and a half lengths'. The next to finish were Muscari, Dave, Archibald, and NamuteYe. True Blood practically made a oneliorse race of it, fend Aurumavis did well to get second ‘from the outside berth at the barrier. ..Arch Amie also, showed signs of a return to form. The placed horses in- the Takapuna Plate, Ruffles, True Blood and Delightment, all won their races very easily. 1
