TO END NOISE

MOVE AGAINST MOTOR-CYCLISTS MAYOR ANNOUNCES HIS INTENTIONS SILENCERS MUST BE USED A move against the motor-cyclist nuisance is contemplated by the Mayor. Yesterday Mr Norwood announced that he intended to give instructions that the by-law demanding silencers should bo enforced. In ibis Wellington follows the example of Christchurch. There suburban councils have moved together to end speeding by day and noisy exhausts by night which together have ended their patience. And the city has tho full sympathy of the local Automobile. Association, at a recent meeting of which one member described motor-cycles as “the most offensive things on the road.” “There is no doubt that amidst the largo number of motor-cyclists in Wellington there are these who act as if the road belonged to them,” said the Mayor yesterday, when announcing his decision. “They do not observe what is a reasonable speed on the roads, though speaking generally there *s not the same reason for complaint in Wellington that exists in other parts of the country. Probably the twisty roads in the vicinity of Wellington have something to do with that. “On tho other hand the noise of motor-cyclists is a serious nuisance, and a considerable number of complaints have reached me from time to time on this subject, especially from resident neighbourhoods. „ Cyclists have caused undue disturbance, and have shown great want of consideration. We have a by-law which can be enforced insisting on the presence of silencers on the machines, and while it is impossible for inspectors to _ be everywhere I mean to give instructions for the enforcement of that by-law.”
