THOUSANDS IDLE
THROUGH STRIKE OF OTHERS NEWCASTLE COLLIERIES CLOSED SETTLEMENT UNLIKELY By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. SYDNEY, November 30. Officials of the Crane Employees’ Union met representatives of the Railway Commissioners in conference, when certain terms of settlement were submitted by the Commissioners. These terms were placed before a mass meeting of the union later and were rejected. The meeting decided to continue the strike until the department agreed to reinstate the 86 men dismissed. The dismissal of the crane employees was due to the operation of the “noorertimo” strike, there not being sufficient work to justify the retention of the services of the crane drivers. (Received November 30, 8.50 p.m.) As the result of the crane drivers’ strike at Newcastle four collieries are closed, and it is expected that more than half the mines on the Newcastle and Maitland fields will close to-morrow. So- far 2000 men have been thrown idle. If the dispute is not speedily settled the total will reach 6000. SEAMENTAKENO ACTION WILL CONFER WITH STRIKERS. (Received November 30, 10.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 30. Meetings ot the Seamen’s Union in Sydney and Melbourne decided not to take definite action in the “no overtime” strike, pending a conference with the Waterside Workers’ Federation.
