The vessel first flew thp Union Company’s flag in the San Franrisco mail, passenger and cargo trade, replacing the Mararoa, which is now tied up at Wellington. After trading across the Pacific. Ocean for seven years it wns replaced by tho Moana, a slightly larger and faster steamer. The Monowai then entered tho intercolonial service, making regular visits to Auckland and Wollington from Sydney. Later the vessel saw service on the New Zonlantl coast in conjunction with the Mokoia. Finally, about six years ago, it was laid up nt Port Chalmers. Twice during the lime the Monowai was engaged in the service between the colonies the vessel became disabled, • but on both occasions was picked up and towed into port by the Mokoia. The first breakdown, caused by the propeller striking some submerged wreckage, occurred in October, 1901, and the second in September, 1909, when the steering gear failed. The sof-ond breakdown was the more serious. The story of the ship's rescue by the Mokoia was one of splendid seamanship. Contain J. T.
