CALEDON IN CARNIVAL

REVELS AT KILBIRNIE HOST OF ATTRACTIONS, After having been postponed twice on account of the boisterous weather tho great Caledonian Carnival was opened at Kilbirnie Vast night. Owing to the unavoidable absence of his Worship the Mayor (Mr O. .1. B. Norwood), the carnival was opened by Councillor W. H. Bennett. In a brief speech Mr Bennett remarked that no better day could have been chosen to open tho carnival than St. Andrew s Day. Sir John Luke wished the promoters every success, and also commented on the fast that it was a good sign that St. Andrew’s Day was chosen for the opening. _ , Mr R. H. Nimmo, chief of the Caledonian Societies, thanked eyfcrv one for the support which was being given to the carnival. Ho then called upon Councillor Bennett to declare tho revels open. Boxes of chocolates were presented to various lady visitors, and three cheers were given for the Caledonian Society. . Excellent programmes aro being given daily. Among the many attractions are —Brilliant light effects, tug-of-war contests, boxing tournament ( b.v kind permission and under the auspices of the Wellington Boxing Association), Evauß Bay Yacht Club regatta, life-saving displays, and competitions by surf clubs (under auspices of Royal Life-saving Society), spectacular fireworks display by Chinese citizens, latest _ side-shows and novelties from Dunedin Exhibition, dancing, shingle contest, and lucky baby competition. Children's plain, fancy, paper, and poster dances in dance pavilion on ground on Saturday, December 4th and 11th, at 3 p.m. Twelve prizes will be awarded. Sections: 4 years and under, 7 years and under, and 10 years and under.

The object of the carnival is to raise funds for the building of an up-to-date Caledonian Hall in Wellington.
