FEILDING SPRING RACES OPEN
GRAND KNIGHT DOWNS FAVOURITE VISITOR IN STAKES CUP WON DECISIVELY BY DIOGENES ROY REED SUSPENDED FOR TWO WEEKS ON CHARGE OF CROSSING
(By
“CARBINE”
PALMERSTON NORTH, November 30. The Feilding races opened to-day in unseasonable weather. Very little rain fell, but the day was cold and cheerless. The course was heavy through recent rains, and many of the horses were unable to master the going. One result of this upsetting of calculations was that the general run of bettors had a lean day. Speculation was much lighter than it was a year ago, when money was flowing more freely, and when the meeting was opened on a Saturday. . Diogenes continued on his winning way by scoring the Feilding Cup, and, as at Levin, he won decisively. The Stakes was a good race" won by a good horse, Grand Knight, whose finishing effort was too much for the sprinting contingent opposed to him. Happenings toward the conclusion of the Trial Plate attracted the attention of the officials, and after inquiry R. Reed was suspended for fourteen days on a charge of crossing, and B. H. Morris was severely reprimanded for allegedly giving unsatisfactory evidence.
Nukumai was sent out favourite for the Hurdles and Carawock and Koeuau were the best backed of the others. Roman, Sir Pam, Little River, Sottano and Carawock were the early leaders and running through the straight the order was Little, River, Carawock, Roman, Sir Pam, Gauntlet, Nukumai, Bonecto, and Koauau. Entering the back Little River was still bowling along in the van, but it was not long before the scene began to change. Three furlongs from home Gauntlet was in front from Koauau, while Nukumai was running up into third place. Gauntlet led into the straight from Koauau and Nukumai, with Carawock next and several others under pressure. In a good finish Gauntlet drew out to win by a couple of lengths from Nukumai. About the same distance hack came Carawock in third position. Koauau was a good fourth, Matu fifth, and Sir Pam sixth. Roman fell at the last fence which had been flattened. Gauntlet was at a long price for a horse which looked a distinct possibility, and he paid a double figure dividend. AN “INTERESTING” FINISH Scratchings made it possible to run the Aorangi Trial Plate without a 1 division. Although ho drew a bad ! position at the barrier Resinous was | a good favourite. There was money also for General Wai. Motto was jumped out smartly and led from Eka, Powhiri, Ktdos and Truney. Resinous had been quick enough to move, but did not hold his position, and crossing the top he was lying sixth and endeavouring to go round the field. Kalos and Eka led into tho straight from Powhiro, Molto, Lady Canthia and Resinous. Molto hit the front half a furlong from home, but in the last few strides General Wai got a run on the fence and won by a neck. Kalos was a good third and Powhiri fifth. Resinous made an effort in the straight hut was too far back to get to the leaders. Takaroa and Limosa fell and their riders were shaken, but not seriously hurt. Nearing the finish of the race Molto appeared to interfere with Powhiri. A long inquiry was held into a charge of crossing against Roy Reed, rider of Molto. and at the end of the proceedings it was stated officially that Reed had been suspended for fourteen days, and that B. H. Morris, the rider of Powhiri, had been severely reprimanded because it was considered be had given unsatisfactory evidence. DIOGENES AGAIN Another win for the consistent Diogenes was recorded when the Feilding Cup came up for decision. Glenross was the favourite, and most of the others were paying a fair price. The field was sent away to a good start, and running through the straight Indian Sage had charge from Kilfaire, Glenross, Joy Bird, and Giengariff. Euphonium and Perle de Leon were at tho tail of the field. As the field entered the back Joy Bird was showing just in front of Indian Sage and Modem, with Kilfaire, Glenross, and Diogenes next in a strung-out field. Changes were taking SI ace as the field crossed the top. Joy ird and Indian Sage still held the lead, but Indian Sage sViwed down at about this stage. Novar was close in behind the leaders, and ffiogenes was with him. There was a break, and then came Kilfaire and Avola with _ Merry Day making up ground fast. Diogenes led into the straight from Giengariff, Novar, and Kilfaire with Merry Day sweeping round fast on the outer. Diogenes drew away in the straight, and won casing up by a couple of lengths from -Merry Day. Kilfaire was a length and a half away third, Joy Bird fourth, and Giengariff fifth. Following that there was a gap, and at the bead of the next lot were Novar, | Glenross and Euphonium, t In a fair betting race Elysianor, l.adv Anstruther, and Great Day were the best backed of the field far the j Kovhai Handicap. Klysianor and I Great Day got away well, and led along the back from Rising Star, Ruakura, Vivo, and Fiery Comet. Great Day and Elysianor were at the head , of affairs crossing the top where | Klvsianor was assisted by a run on the j rails. Elysianor'led into the straight, hut Alloway came from the middle of the field with a strong challenge, and 1 a bumping finish ensued. Allaway had tho raoe won a furlong from home, and ho crossed the line a length to the good. Rising Star was a length ahead cl' FI v si an nr. who died out rather n a ink iy. Vivo and Fiery Comet were fourth and fifth respectively. GRAND KNIGHT TOO GOOD IN STAKES Scratchings reduced tho starters in the Feilding Stakes to a nice field of seven, and in a good contest victory went to the Wellington horse. Grand Knight. Four of his opponents were Absurds, and once he got to them in the straight not one of them could live with him at the finish. Tamatete, l.imited, and Lady Cavendish, wlni were in line, led the field in the first stage of the race, with The Thorn, Grand Knight, Oscillation, and Glentruin following. Glentruin having got away rather badly. Two furlongs from home Limited had a slight advantage over Tamatete, who was half a length ahead of Lady Cavendish, who was running outside the other pair. Grand Knight bad worked up into fourth position, and when heads were straightened up for home he was not tar lrnm tho lenders. I.nd.v Cavendish was done with. and Grand Knight went niter I.'initod and Tamatefe. ITe lutd them in sale keeping half-way
along the straight, and beat Limited home hv a good neck, while Tamatete was another neck away third, The Thorn fourth, Lady Cavendish fifth, Oscillation sixth, and Glentruin last. OPEN SPRINT TO ORCHID First Acre, Merry Jest, and Orchid were the principal fancies in the f lying Handicap, and all ran fair races. Orchid began ♦ell, and took np the running from Royal Damon and Epistle. First Acre, who had been hustled through from the back was in behind the leaders crossing the top. Orchid was first to turn for home, and he stalled off all challenges to win by a length from Epistle, who was ridden out to beat, by about the same distance, Lady Bentinck, on whom less than £IOO was invested. Royal Damon was a fair fourth, and after a considerable interval came Deluge, Nine of Spades, Merry Jest and First Acre. First Acre spent his energy early in the contest, when after getting away badly he was rushed up close to the leaders before half the journey was over. WON ALL THE WAY Plain Sailing won the Fitzroy Hack 1 Handicap from end to end. She drew No. 1 at the harrier, and was soon in the van from Spode, Volplane, Sea Star, and Jazz Baby. Plain Sailing had increased her lead crossing the top, and was doing it nicely, with Sea Star, Volplane, Spode, Jazz Baby, Tannadice, Bank Note, and Lieutenant Bill following. Plain Sailing led into the straight, and ran on to win easily by two lengths from Volplane, with Sea Star a good .third, and Addlepate, Jazz Baby, Horomea, and Tip Tree next. The winner won with something in hand, and will be benefited by the race. Monaghan, Bennanee and The Lamb were the best backed in the Kiwitea Highweight Handicap. There was a long delay at the barrier due to the misbehaviour of Pantler and others, but eventually Mr Price effected a creditable start. The Lamb led through the straight from Beaumont, Santonio. and Bennanee, hut catering the back Bennanee was moving to the front, and Monaghan was improving his position. Beaumont and The Lamb were in behind Bennanee with Santonio, Alaric, Kilmiss, Monaghan, and Killoch all close together next. Bennanee and Santonio led across the top from Alaric, The Lamb, who was fading, and Monaghan. Santonio took charge soon after entering the straight, and finishing more genuinely than usual won by a couple of lengths from the fast finishing Kilmiss, who heat Alaric by a length. Bennanee was right up with Alaric. The Lamb was fifth and Monaghan sixth. The Lamb will do better when he gets a drier course. There will be a small field in the Cheltenham Hurdles, in which the best looks to be Enare, whose toughest opponent might be Koauau. Orchid should rup well in the Collerton Handicap, and the best of the light weights might be Epistle. A new horse in the race is Inferno, and if he gets away well it is difficult to select anything to beat him. A weak field will contest the Novice Stakes, and the favourites might be Motto and Petal. Plain Sailing has been risen 14lb for to-day’s win, but should go well again. Cerf and Volplane might be the hard ones to beat. On Levin running Hipo ought to be in the picture in the St. Audrew’s Handicap. The Lamb, Monaghan and Kilmiss are expected to show up in the Empire Handicap, and Tom Bracken will be one of the best backed in the Oroua Nursery.
