BRIGHTER LIGHTSHIPS

Trinity House, which controls the British system of lighthouses and light* ships, has a new line in the latter. They are of an improved type, and are stated to he a great advance on those now. in use. The first two lightships of the new pattern are to replace vessels which nave been marking shoals off tho f-oasts of Sussex and Lincolnshire. They are steel-built and illuminated by electricity. Up to the present, the Trinity House lightships have used oil. Another important feature is the suhmarsno oscillator, which replaces tho old submarine hell. The use of t.he oscillator enables ships to pick up the warning .signals within a range of about twenty miles during foggy or nustv weather.
