SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY

A garden party in aid of the Wellington Central Church Primary School was lietd yesterday afternoon in Mrs T. Hislop’s garden, Salamanca road. The cold weather, unfortunately, prevented a large attendance, but there was much interest displayed. The visitors assembled on the tennis court, and short addresses were made by Mr R. L. Button and the Dev. Bernard R. White (organising secretary). Both spoke of the need of such a school for the teaching of religious subjects as well as the usual school work, and it was hoped all would help to the best of their ability in making the ideal a realisation. Mr Button said they had received much help and sympathy. They were receiving donations at the rate of £IOO a week. That, however, would mean five years to achieve their object. They wanted £250 a week, so that the school could bo built and equipped in two years. He felt sure it would be, and those present would be attending the opening in that time. After the New Year they intended to launch the campaign in earnest. After the speeches the following resolution, proposed by Mrs Fry and seconded by Mrs Harpct, was passed: “That this meeting heartily approves the proposal to build a new church school in Wellington, and will do everything possible to further the project.” Mrs Sprott, as head of the women’s executive, had called upon ladies from the different parishes to assist, and the following were helping at stalls or with afternoon tea; Mesdames Kllis, Brown (Hutt) Gaby, Nibbs, Wilkins, Todd. Holdswortli, Curtis, L»arnach, Robertson, Miss Brandon, Miss Buckeridge, and Miss Jenkins, who was in charge of the gate. Several Girl Guides lent assistance during the afternoon.
