HOSPITAL APPOINTMENT

AWKWARD SITUATION MR J. COYLE AWAITS CONFIRMATION NEWCASTLE WANTS LOCAL MAN A somewhat delicate situation lias arisen over the protests which have been made by the Newcastle authorities and the Labour Party against the appointment of Mr J. Coyle, secretary of the Wellington Hospital Board, as secretary to the Newcastle Hospital. The news of the appointment was first received by Press Association cable last week, and at the Hospital Board meeting last Thursday the matter was only discussed in committee, as Mr Coyle had only received cabled information of the appointment, and was awaiting the letter of confirmation before tendering liis resignation. It is not expected that the letter of confirmaion of the appointment will come to hand until Wednesday, and the opposition which lias been raised to the appointment ITas made the position somewhat delicate. A spe-

To a “Times’* representative Mr Coyle said he could hardly discuss the position as he had not yet received tTie letter of appointment, and had not yet submitted his resignation. He pointed out that the Wellington City Council had just appointed an Australian as Town Clerk, but over there it looked like Australia for the Australians. Of course it was very

natural to wish to give local men an opportunity. The appointment was made at a special meeting of the Newcastle Board of Governors on Monday last w r cek, and exception appeared to have been taken to tho manner of the appointment, it being considered llie position should have been advertised locally as was usual both in Australia and New Zealand. It is understood that there is not likely to be any further development before Wednesday, much depending upon the letter of confirmation.
