BURNT AT SEA

(Received November 29, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 28. The liner Ayrshire was completely destroyed by fire near Colombo. The crew numbering 100, wore rescued by the City of Nagpur and the Aeneas. The warship Lupin was left in attendance on the derelict. The fire had its origin in the bunkers, which were quickly red-hot. The flames spread amidships, blazing fiercely upwards, sometimes to the height of 100 to 150 feet. The Ayrshire was built in the latter half of 1903 by Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Newcastle; for the Scottish Shire Line. She has a gross tonnage of 9137, and her principal dimensions are: Length, 460 ft; breadth, 58ft; depth, 31ft. The Ayrshire left Sydney at the beginning of November, laden with wool and refrigerated cargo for Great Britain.
