PORT SYDNEY’S VOYAGE. Arriving at Auckland from New York, on Thursday evening, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Sydney dropped anchor in the stream. The Port Sydney proceeded from London to New York in ballast, averaging 13.08 knots for the trip. She loaded all her cargo at New York and sailed from that port on October 21st. A call was made at Norfolk, Virginia, for bunkers, and owing to the large number of steamers waiting to coal, the Port Sydney did not resume her voyage until October 26th. Colon was reached on November 2nd, and after taking in further coal, the vessel passed through the Panama Canal , and resumed her voyage from Balboa the same day. Coming across the Pacific 1 the steaiiifrr made a short stop off Pitcairn Island on November 14th. Favourable weather was experienced for the greater part of the trip, which was uneventful. From Auckland, the Port Sydney sailed yesterday for Napier, WelHugton, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff, io complete discharge. The average speed troin New York to Auckland was 12. US knots. En route from London to Auckland, Port Chalmers and Timaru, the New Zealand Shipping Company have been advised by cable that the steamer Tdngntiro arrived at Suva on Sunday, November 2Bth. GERMAN SHIPPING. Advice from Berlin states that the Norddeuttfcher Lloyd, Bremen, has increased itn capital to a total of J3J.250.000, thus equalling if s pre-war enpitnl. THE CANADIAN SCOTTISH. The Canadian Government Line advise that the steamer Canadian Scottish returns to Wellington to-morrow from Dunedin, and later poceeds to Napier, thence Auckland, to complete loading. Her departure from Auckland is scheduled for December 7th, for New York, Boston and Halifax. INCREASED FREIGHT RATES. A recent edition of ‘'Syren mid Shipping” states that it has been decided to increase the freight rates by conference vessels sailing from Canada to tho United Kingdom by 15 per cent. This is due not only to the high prico of coal, but also to the fact that these vesselowing to the coal trouble at Home new bunker in Canada for the round voyage, and consequently cannot carry so much cargo. It is understood that tho conference ships sailing from United States ports will make a similar increase, but it is not yet known whethev the Canadian Government Merchant Marino boats will come into line and augment their rates. TIMARU HARBOUR BOARD. Trade and revenue returns for nine months in 1924-25-26 have just been issued by the Timaru Harbour Board. Tho shipping returns show that the total net registered tonnage of vessels entering the port for the nine niontW period in 1924 was 437.776; in 1925 the total was 396,848, and in 1926 the total tonnage was 441,284. The latter figures constitute a record for the port. The revenue received for the nine months’ period in 1924 was ,£28,854 2s Id, in 1925 .£27,510 10s Bd. and in 1926 ,£30,379 12s 3d. The latter figures are also a record. The total imports during the period in 1924 were 65.316 tons, 54,814 tons in 1925, and 56,543 tons in 2926. The total exports for the nine months in 1924 were 48,885 tons. 59,179 tons in 1925, and 64,824 tons in 1926, making the total imports ami exports in tons, 114,201 (1924), 113,993 (1925), and 121,372 (1926). VEHICULAR FERRY KARAKARA. Bearing a somewhat weather-beaten appearance, tho Sydney Ferries new vehicular ferry steamer Karakara, arrived at Sydney on November 13th, 100 days out from Liverpool. The Ka rale ara is the third vehicular boat built for the ferries in English yards, the other two being the Koondooloo and KaJang. She is a sister ship to the latter vessel, and' after an overhaul will run in conjunction with tho fleet on the Fort Macquarie-Mileon’s Point service. Tho Karakara came out via tho Suez Canal, Singapore and Torres Strait, and at different stages of tho voyage, was severely tested in heavy weather. She waited 17 days at Aden for the monsoon season to end. and on resuming her voyage was compelled 1o seek shelter under Cape Guardifui. Terrific heat was experienced down the Red Sea, and some excitement was occasioned when u Maltese fireman ■wont mad and j jumped overboard. The Karakara put j back, and picked the man up in an exI hausted condition. He was landed at Aden.
