MR COYLE’S APPOINTMENT RAISES A STORM

Co y i ej c f Wellington, as secretary of the Newcastle Hospital Board, j s meeting with strong opposition in Newcastle. A meeting of the Labour Day committee strongly criticised the Hospital Board for appointing a New Zealander to the position without first calling applications locally. The committee is calling a conference of representatives of the district industrial unions to consider tlie withdrawal of indus trial subscriptions to the hospital, totalling £30,000 annually, until the position is satisfactorily atjust'ed. Other public bodies also have expressed disapproval of the appointment. The Mayor of New castle declared he could not understand why the president of the H ospital Board filled the position without first calling general applications. The Mayor stated that it was his intention to call a pub lie meeting to protest against the appointment.
