DASHED HOPES
MISSION COLLECTION WENT IN WRONG DIRECTION. (Specail to “Times.”) CHRISTCHURCH, November 27. Two of the most active leaders of the unemployed suffered bitter disappointment this morning when they learned that the proceeds of the special collection for the relief of the unemployed, which was taken at the Gipsy Smith mission laßt night, was handed over to the Mayor for distribution instead of being given to themselves for that purpose as they had hoped. A few days ago these men led a deputation of unemployed which waited on the missiouer and asked for his help in relieving the distress. Gipsy Smith -was sympathetic and promised that at Friday night’s meeting he would arrange for a special collection to ho taken up. On this promise the two leaders built high hopes of securing a substantial nucleus of the fund which they have control, and it was with feelings of great surprise that they learned that the secretary of the mission had paid the money amounting to £23 4s 3d, to the Town Clerk, with a request that it be placed at the disposal of the Mayor for distribution.
