GIRLS’ COLLEGES

WELLINGTON ANNUAL DISPLAY AND SPORTS PARENTS’ DAY The annual parents’ day, with the usual display of work, was held at the Girls’ College on Saturday, when also the final sports events were to have taken place, hut owing to the wet weather the latter part of the programme had to be abandoned. However, in spite of the wet weather there was a large attendance of parents and friends interested in the work of the girls. This was to be seen in various classrooms, the commercial work, shorthand, etc., in one room; in another cookery, under Miss Ross, where it was to be seen the pupils were taught to be artistic as well as utilitarian in their domestic work. This, too, was to be seen in the rooms where sewing was displayed, in one fancy work, d’oyleys, etc., finely embroidered; in another dresses made for themselves by the girls. Also some dressed dolls and scrap books prepared for the children’s hospital were on view. Upstairs two rooms were devoted to scientific experiments, one to pure chemistry, another to applied. Miss Cornish, who was in charge, showed visitors round, and explained what was being done. There were to be seen experiments showing the formation of coal gas, how salts and crystals are prepared, the effect of heat on light and dark surfaces, the principle® governing central heating, the electrolysus of water, a mixture of sulphur and iron separated by a magnet, and various models used in the teaching of chemicals. In the applied science there were experiments set up showing the testing of water in food and finding the mineral constituents) the process of the digestion of yeast; testing baking powder; the separation of gluten from flour; the burning of sugar into carbon; the turning of starch into glucose, were among the food test experimenfcs, and there were also to bo seen the process of soap making, and the influence of acids and alkalis on metals, all oareful experiments in the teaching of domestic science. A fascinating room was the botanical one, where a large number of specimens of New Zealand plants were to be seen, and samples of dried plants placed in books by tlie pupils, some of which were very artistically done. Miss Jackson was in charge of this room. ENTERTAINMENT Afternoon tea, in charge of Miss 'Williams, was served in two rooms, and there were several stalls in charge of members of the Parents’ Association and Old Girls’ Association. A flower stall was in charge of Mrs Wood; work stall of Mrs Phillips; and dolls of Mrs Downing. During the afternoon in the central hall, scenes from “The Rivals” were given by Sinclair Breen as Lydia Languish. Edna Purdie as Mrs Malaprop, Rolls as Sir Anthony Absolute, Kathleen Keenan as Captain Absolute, and Nesta Wood as a maid. Later a display of Swedish drill was given under the direction of Mrs Taylor. The prizes for the sports which had been concluded were given to the winners by Mrs Clark, president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Parents’ Association. Miss Greig, the principal, in addressing the gathering, said that they regretted that the parents had not been able to witness the sports. Owing to the late date of the gymnastic displny it had been necessary to combine the sports and display, and many of the former events had been run off during the week. They regretted very much that the wet weather prevented them being finished that day. Among those who were present during the afternoon were Mr Darroch (member of tlie Board of Governors), Miss Hetherington (inspector ol schools), Miss Dyer (inspector ot home science), Mrs and Miss A. lope, Miss Bathom, principal of Wellington East College, Mrs Dawson (president ot the Old Girls, Miss Anyon, Miss Williams (college secretary), Miss Coad, Miss Kershaw and other members ot the staff, Mrs Anderson, Mr and Mrs Gillespie, Mrs Marshall, Mrs Treadwell, Mrs Townlev, and many other parents and friends of the girls.
