ON THE ROADS

HIGHWAYS BOARD PROGRESS OF NORTH ISLAND TOUR. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, November 27. Tlie Main Highways Board concluded a tour of The Waikato last night when they met the Waikato County in order to discuss the problem of maintaining nine miles of the Great South road between Rangiriri and Ngaruawahia. The' chairman of the County Council explained that the settlers had been burdened with the upkeep of a costly road, used mainly by foreign traffic. The county had been saddled with a liability of £I4OO, the cost of reconditioning the road, and could not meet the bill. Mr A. 15, .lull, of the Highways Board, said that the county was handicapped through the existence of three road districts within its boundaries. This made for inefficient administration. 'The figures quoted showed that the county was losing £IOOO in subsidies owing to the dual system of administration. Mr H. Wynyard suggested that the county might consider asking for a commission to allocate the share of the maintenance among the outside districts, whoso settlers used the road. Mr C. J. McKenzie said the board would give the matter every consideration.
