SUPS AT GREYMOUTH
TRAFFIC SUSPENDED MEASURES TO RELIEVE SUBSI- r DENCE. > Per Press Association. " GREYMOUTH, November 28. *» Ihe traffic on the Midland railway q line at the Greymoutk end continues „ to he menaced by the subsidence of the n bank of the Grey river at Omoto, 2 causing tlie line to fall. Trouble of 3 this nature is of long standing at the C place in question, but the present subsidence, which is duo to the greasy a hack movement in the gully, began at f the time of tho recent heavy hoods, V and has continued since. Meantime a ballast train and sixty men have every ( day been engaged depositing gravel at j, the locality, but this is evidently in- c effective. Last evening, at 7 o’clock, the subsidence increased rapidly being faster than the gang could make good with fresh gravel, the result being the suspension of the late train service in that direction. S This morning the line is four feet t at least below the normal level. To- 11 day two ballast trains and extra 1 gangs were working, and it is hoped, 11 therefore, that traffic may bo main- 1 tained to-morrow, hut it is apparent ® the river is eroding, and that other j; measures are required to end the sub- ] sidence, namely, either cutting a new t channel, thereby removing tho river’s 1: course some distance, or a tunnel for c a new railway route into the town. t ■ I
