She started only once last season, when she ran unplaced. On Saturday she returned a very handsome double-figure dividend. With his return to the North, Black Cruiser seems to have recovered his lost form. He won the High Weight Handicap at Takapuna, and in doing so defeated the favourites. Black Cruiser paid a price well on toward the limit. Pouri touched a short price in the High Weight Handicap, but saved his supporters by running second, Pouri is a six-year-old Spalpeen gelding, who contested five races last season without being placed once. It was on his form in winning the Bracelet at Cambridge this season that he was so well backed on Saturday. The old Beragoon gelding, Namu* tere, nearly came to light again on Saturday, bub New Moon defeated him for first honours. Namutere has recorded a- number of placed performances in the last couple of seasons without winning a race. Ruapapa, who won the Alison Cup on Saturday, won the event last year, too. A year ago he carried 8.5, and umse he beat included Musketoon, Polonett and Spoony. This year his weight was 41b less, but even so he was not really strongly in favour. The Jamieson stable was represented in the Alison Cup, when the acceptances appeared, by Nippy and Spoony, but the late withdrawal of Nippy left Spoony the sole representative. Spoony ran a creditable race in second place, showing that the Papakura trainer’s judgment was pretty sound when he decided to rely on the Nassau gelding. Spoony started in last year’s- Alison Cup. was fairly well backed and ran unplaced. The Kilbroney-Marsnla gelding, New Moon, had been expected more than once of late, and when he arrived at the head of the field which contested the Borough Handicap he brought with him a double-figure dividend. New Moon was on the minimum on Saturday, and a reasonable rise in weight should not prevent him from winning more stake money. When High Finance and Chips were withdrawn from the Cambria Handicap the race looked on paper to be a good thing for Ti Tree. Whether Ti a*oe found the conditions unsuitable, or whatever the cause, the favourite was beaten, and did not even pav a dividend. The victory went to Lorna Doon, with Exalted, one of the Leighton breed, in second place. Down-the-line horses have sprung quite a number of surprises on Auckland courses, and another was worked off on Saturday when Lorna Doon won the two-year-old classic at Takapuna. Lorna Dcon is trained at Te Aroha by H. Eva, and is by Tea Tray from Lassie Doon. He runs in the ownership of Mr W. Dunn. Battlement gave indications while in Australia that he will stay well. The present intention is to contest the Great Northern Derby with him, and prior to going North he is to be given a race at Timaru. When he ran in the Stewards’ Handicap of ,192-5, Money Order showed a turn of speed which should entitle him to consideration among the good sprinters. Ho was off the scene for some time, but early in the present spring was doing remarkably fast work at Kiecarton. His preparation was further interrupted, but it is expected another start will be made with him this week. If he goes on the right way he might be taken to Auckland for some of the sprint events at the Christmas-New Year meeting. Baldowa, who won the Thompson Handicap at Trentham last autumn, is reported to be very well and fairly forward in condition. If this report is correct, it should not be long before he is heard from. Nincompoop and Precious are likely to be brought North to race at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. The filly by King Mark, from Fairy Gold has been named Fairy Mark. She is a half-sister to the Wellington Cup winner, Maioha, who w r as by Hallowmas. tounny Loch lias been schooled over the pony hurdles at Kiecarton, and, evidently, an effort is being made to convert him into a hurdler. Also, it looks as if his trainer realises that the big fellow’s day as a fiat racer is nearing its end. eiunny Loch is a master of weight, so, if he keeps sound and turns out to be a good jumper, there should still be some profit in him. A horse which can win a Winter Cup with 10.9 ought to be able to hold liis own with most of our hurdlers. It is over three years, of course, since Sunny Loch won the Winter Cup, and he is not as good now as he was then, which is not surprising, seeing that he is approaching his tenth year. Leslie Young, a joinery foreman of Surrey Kjlls, Victoria, who has never been on a racecourse in his life, shared a ticket in Taftersail’s £2U,(XX) Melbourne Cup sweep with a Sunday school superintendent, and they drew SpearfeJt. A shrewd head warned Young of the way of trainers and offered to see V. O’Neill about \iie matter on his behalf. He sought the trainer out at Caulfield and offered him a percentage. O’Neill replied, “I have got tne horse backed for a solid fortune, and I don’t want anyone’s blood money. i have refused other offers before yours.” Ho wished the holders luck aud said lie expected his horse to win. Prior to the mile saddle at Otahuhu there were rumours that Lady Dunmore had been responsible lor a pretty .‘‘lick mile on the Otahuhu track and this caused her to be well supported. She moved away well and was never further back than third In the .straight she finished on best, and beat Glandoro in an exciting finish. As she was timed to go 2.13 2-5 it will be difficult to win again with her if she is handicapped even on that time without being penalised further. OA couple of seasons ago the daughter of Specialist and Miss Dunmore won some good races "lien trained by. J A X, i’ayl-
but she never went so fast as she did ; for her present owner-trainer, T, P. ing penalised further. A couple of ! Grimmoud on this occasion.—Auck- i land “Star.” The Southland mare, Set Sail, is to i be tried out over longer journeys. She [ is engaged at the South Canterbury ! meeting in the two principal events, ! to be run respectively over a mile • and a quarter and a mile. Commenting upon the presence of ( The Banker, Limerick aud Naos in the I Melbourne Cup, all of them New Zea- f land-bred, a writer in the Melbourne “Globe” said: “Me iiave always looked to this quarter for distance horses, and evidently the supply has nut yet run out, though it may be that, as elsewhereVthroughbut the world, there has also been an increase of more speed in the Dominion. Still, a country that continues to produce even a fair percentage of solid stayers can in these days take considerable credit to itself, and New Zealand is certainly doing that.” Apparently South Australians have taken readily to the Victorian plan of drawing barrier positions as soon as acceptances have been declared. The new system was recently 7 adopted by 7 the S.A.J.C., the ruling body of the State. The Adelaide correspondent of the “Sydney Sun” advises that racegoers regard the system as progressive, and that its 'popularity makes its success certain. Certainly, time has not confirmed the tears which the opponents of the plan gave expression to when it was first, adopted in Victoria. It is safe to say that many Sydney 7 racegoers would like to see the idea in operation in New South Wales. After going out to do her preliminary for the Franklin Handicap at Otahuhu, Buz Buz got rattled and bolted a couple of laps. R. Hall could not do anything with her until she had beaten herself and then he brought her back to the paddock. The stewards allowed her to be withdrawn from the race, but there was no necessity to deal with the totalisator investments as she was bracketed with Lord Nepean, who eventually ran second.
TAKAPUNA MEETING :
MOST FAVOURITES BEATEN (By Telegraph—Special to “Times.”) AUCKLAND, November 28. Tlie weather was wet and squally for the opening day of the Takapuna meeting on Saturday. Daddy’s Girl and Wedding March fell in the Tiri Handicap, an inquiry resulting in a finding that the occurrences were purely accidental. Kuapapa won the Alison Cup from end to end, and came back to form with a vengeance. Totalisator investments reached. £42,449, against £62,420 of last year, a decrease of £19,971 10s. Tne bracket, le.Kawana and Town Bird, carried more money thau Royal Picture in the .Melrose Maiden Stakes. Dimmer soon led a strung out field along the back, where he was joined by Town Bird, the latter taking charge across the top from Dimmer, Royal Picture, Arch Queen, and Cantab. At tbo turn Town Bird was closely attended by Arch Queen, Cantab, and Royal Picture, and in the straight Arch Queen challenged, and finishing strongly beat Town Bird by a length and a halt, with Cantab two lengths away third, followed by Bahama, Harbour View, Te Kawana, and Dimmer. Royal Picture and Dimmer both showed speed, but stopped in the heavy ground. Town Bird made a great effort, and is evidently on the improve. Those who did not get clear early had no chance, and of these Bahama did very well to get fourth. HIRI HANDICAP Royal Form was a better fancy than Pouri for the Tiri Highweight Handicap. Fair Abbey made the early running, Daddy’s Girl and Wedding March having fallen. Royal Form had taken charge at the back from Fair Abbey and Black Cruiser with Pouri trailed off last. Fair Abbey was again in front at the top, but Royal Form led into tho straight from Black Cruiser. Fair Abbey and Sea Comet, with Pouri closing up, on the outside. Black Cruiser headed Royal Form in the straight, and won by half a length from Pouri, who finished fast, a neck in front of Royal Form, the next lot being Sea Comet, Hangawera arid Kameharaeha. Royal Form had every chance but was not good enough. Pouri’s rider gave a wretched display, tailing off and making his effort when the race was practically over. He should have won easily. A FAVOURITE BEATEN Archibald was a sound favourite for the Borough Handicap, Le Choucas being next in request. When they settled down along the back Le Ohoucas was leading Archibald, Namutere, New Moon, Ring the Bell and Arch Amie. Le Choucas dropped back crossing the top, and at the home turn Archibald, Namutere and New Moon were in close order dear of Le Choucas. New Moon came fast in the straight, and won decisively by two lengths from Namutere, who beat Archibald by a length and a half, with Ring the BelL Tbursby and Le Choucas next. Archibald was disappointing, as he stopped quickly at the end after having every chance. Ring the Bell was always handy, and will do better on firmer ground. ALISON CUP Tresham and Master Doon were backed in order for the Alison Cup. Kuapapa immediately hit the front, and with half the distance covered was leading Spoony, Desert Glow, Tresham, Lord Star and Princess Ronnie. Crossing the top Kuapapa and Spoony were out clear of Boomerdav, who in turn was well dear of Princess Ronnie and Transformer. At the turn Ruapapa led Spoony and Boomorday, the others being well beaten. Ruapapa went away in the run home and beat Spoony by three lengths, with Boomerday half a length away third, and then after a gap came Master Doon. Transformer, Desert Glow and Town Bank. Rtiapnpa was always going like a winner, hut Tresham and Desert Glow, after flattering their admirers a mile, stopped badly. The favourite finished last. None of the others ever looked like winning, the ground evidently affecting them adversely. LORNA TTZS YVTNS. Ti Tree was a warm favourite for the Cambria Handicap with Auriculas claiming a good following. Carinthia wryj first ty but Exalted aud
Lorna Doon soon ran to the front, being attended across the top by Arihana and Ti Tree. Exalted appeared to stumble near the turn, ana Lorna Doon led her round into the straight with Arihana and Ti Tree heading the others. Lorna Doon came away in the straight to beat Exalted by three lengths. Ti Tree was three quarters of a length away third, with Arihana, Auriculus and Carinthia in order. The winner is a shapely filly by Tea Tray from Lassie Doon, and showed fine speed. She would probably have won under any conditions. THE PLATE. Tinakoa, Ruffles and True Blood were all well backed for the Takapuna Plate. When they reached the back Ned Kelly, Deliglitment, Tinakoa, Dobbin and Ruffles were the leading division. True Blood then made a fast run, the order at the top being Ned Kelly, Tinakoa, Ruffles, True Blood and Delightment. Ruffles was showing in front as they rounded tho bend, with Tinakoa, Delightment, Ned Kelly and True Blood all handy. Ruffles held his own in. the run home and won in greatstyle by a length and a half from True Blood, with Delightment threequarters of a length away third, followed by Ned Kelly, Tinakoa, Rahepoto and Valkon. Ruffles proved himself a high-class hack, as he drew in the middle of the field and then won decisively. Trtse Blood also did well from wolL out, but Tinakoa., after showing up till the turn, faded out in the straight. PONUI HANDICAP. Quoudong and Wenday were the popular selections for the Ponui Han dicap. Bracken Abbev and Air Queen were early in front, but when they raced to the top Maveelish was showing out from Golden Krist and Blue Sky, Wenday having run up fourth on the rails. Maveelish and Golden Krist swung wide entering the straight, and Wenday shot through, and finishing strongly won a good race by three-quarters of a length from' Golden Krist, who beat Maveelish by half a length, the next lot being Blue Sky, Quondong and Bracken Abbey. Wenday was favoured by a great run on the fence a 77 through, but to win was not out of its turn, as she is very consistent. The favourite is a long strider and was all at sea in the ground. WIN FOR ARCHEEX. Hoariri and Nancy Lee were the main fancies for the Cheltenham Handicap. Arclieen and Pavo jumped out
clear and raced in company across the top, with Value, King Merv, Nancy Lee amd York Abbey heading the others. Dave was up behind Archeon at the turn, wth York Abbey and King Merv handy. Dave finished fast, but ran wide, and Archeen lasted long enough to beat him by half a length. King Merv was two and a half lengths away third, with Aurumavis finishing well next, and Nancy Lee and York Abbey following. The draw at the harrier won for Archeen, as Dave was badly placed. After going a furlong I*avo showed speed, but is not nearly so good as he was. Hoariri was very sore, and made no showing.
