HUMAN IMAGE IN A RUBY
Mr H. W. B. Moreno, a member of the Bengal Legislative Council, has acquired a Burmese ruby which is probably unique, and is of fabulous value, ili-o stone is not a largo one, says a ‘‘Central News’* dispatch from Calcutta, but inside the gem, deep down behind a scarlet cloud, appears the tiny imago of a man, dressed in white, with a dark brown l'aco and deep brown eyes. 'Jim man is wearing a white turban, and the rest of tlio body is covered by the flowing folds of a garment, of while silk. The stone docs not show any crack to indicate how the portrait- came to be inside it, and the director of the Geological Department to whom ii, was submitted nrenounced the stono to be a flawless ruby, and declared the portrait to ho a freak of nature without parallel in his experience. The ruby generally is highly esteemed n India, hut a stone of this character, almost miraculous in its ermfot motion, would he viewed with deep reverence. Mr Moreno declines to disclose how the gem came into 1 is possession.
