CALEDONIAN CARNIVAL
KILBIRNIE RESERVE TO-DAY. Tho great Caledonian carnival which is to be held at Kilbirnie Reserve will be officially opened to-day (Saturday) at 3 p.m., by his Worship the Mayor (Mr C. J. B. Norwood), Sir John Luhe, and the chief (Captain R. 11. Nimmo). It is anticipated by the directors of the society that the carnival will prove a great attraction to the citizens of Wellington. A unique series of attractions are being staged, mainly through the co-operation of tho various sports bodies, clubs, societies, bands, etc., who have all responded most willingly to assist the society in tho object of tho carnival to raise funds for the building of an up-to-date Caledonian Hall in Wellington. A few of the attractions the carnival offers are: A spectacular fireworks display by the Chinese citizens; a boxing tournament under the auspices of the Wellington Boxing Association; yacht and motor-boat racing by the Evans Bay \acht and Motor .Boat Club; lifesaving displays and competitions by the various surf clubs under the auspices of the Royal Life-saving Club; tug-of-war between teams representing the various coinniercial. and industrial houses. There will be a galaxy of sideshows, many of them from Dunedin Exhibition; merry-go-round, ocean wave, etc. The ground will be brilliantly lighted at nights, and the various hands will be in attendance throughout the carnival. Two fancy dress dances for children will be held in the dance pavilion. The dance pavilion will he open every evening, with full jazz orchestra.
