TOO MANY CHURCHES
LONDON CITY’S DIFFICULTY SHOULD SOME BE PULLED DOWN? HOUSE REFUSES TO AGREE By Telegraph.-—Press Assn.—Copyright. Atistr&lian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 26, 7.40 p.m.) LONDON, November 26. In the House of Commons, Lord Hugh Cecil, in moving that the House direct that the Union of Benefices and Disposal of Churches Bill be presented for the Royal assent, explained that the measure authorised the sale of the sites df certain London churches. Owing to the loss of Sunday population there were now 47 parishes for 12.000 resident inhabitants. Nothing would be done without careful inquiry, said Lord Hugh, but if the parishes in the city were reduced in number the funds could be assigned to other churches in the Diocese of London. The Bill would place a difficult matter in the hands of a commission which was in full touch with moderate, rational public opinion. Sir T. Bmvater, a former Lord Mayor of London, moved the rejection of the measure, urging that its object was to pull down great ancient churches in the city to get moner to spend elsewhere. Lord Cecil's motion was rejected by 124 votes to 27.
