RHODES SCHOLARS

VICTORIA AND CANTERBURY COLLEGES MR W. KALAUGHER AND MR A. L. HASLAM CANDIDATES BEFORE BOARD OF SELECTION The board of selection yesterday came to its decision in appointing two New Zealand Rhodes scholars. Two candidates had been submitted from each of the four centres, and each of the eight candidates was interviewed by the board. There was further deliberation after the interviews, and this was followed by the announcement of the decision, in which the choice had fallen upon VICTORIA COLLEGE NOMINEE Mr W. G. Kalaugher, M.A. CANTERBURY COLLEGE NOMINEE Mr A. L. Haslam, LL.M. The successful Wellington Rhodes scholar received his education in other centres than Wellington prior to coming to' Victoria College, while Mr Haslam, of Canterbury College, is a Wellington primary school and Wellington College old boy.

Mr Wilfrid G. Kalaugher) M.A., Victoria University College, was born in 1904, and was educated at the following schools and colleges:—Winchester School (South Canterbury), Stanley Bay School (Auckland), Sacred Heart College (Auckland), Auckland University College (1922-24), and Victoria University College. Took his M.A. with first-class honours in mathematics in 1925; was a good all-round athlete, competing in various New Zealand championships.

Mr A. L. Haslam, LL.M., Canterbury College, was born in February, 1904, and was educated at the following schools and colleges:—lsland Bay School, Wellington; Wellington College, 1917-19; Waitaki Boys’ High School, 1920-21: Canterbury College, 1922-26. He passed his LL.M. in 1925 with first-class honours, and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor; was prominent in several branches of athletics, and represented the college in debating contests.
