WELLINGTON FORESTALLED
WILDING SHIELD CHALLENGE There has been a sad ending to the endeavour of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association to be first in the field with a challenge to Canterbury for the Wilding Shield. Elated at its revealed tennis strength, the association decided to get in early, only to find that Auckland had forestalled it. Auckland has been rather lucky to get in first, though, for it issued no official challenge through the secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, and it was only when Mr Murray Kean lit upon a newspaper report of . the challenge, and wrote to the northern association, that it took the step which gave it priority. However, if Canterbury cannot get its strongest team away to the New Zealand Championships, there is a possibility that the Aucklanders will have to go in quest of the shield.
