NEW ZEALAND BUSH

A sparkling stream, and a grassy bank, Where moss and fern leaf clings, The tall tree ferns and kauri trees— And wafted on the gentle breeze The notes a tui sings. Kowhai golden, manuka white, And rata aflame with red. The low dull drone of the native bees, Clematis, white, and the Christmas . . trees, And supplejack twined overhead. The bellbird’s mimic, the kea’s screech, [ The fantail flits to a tree, And now and then the morepork calls, By tinkling streams and waterfalls, As they wander away to the sea. —DOROTHY MASLEN (aged 13).
