“We used to take notice of Government valuations, but nowadays nobody takes any notice of them—unless they affect the particular district,” said Mr W. Machin (Christchurch) at the Chambers of Commerce conference yesterday. “In fact,” he added, “I am not sure that anyone knows what are the present-day valuations of land. Some of the figures are far higher than there is a possibility of the price reaching within the next few year*.”
