A NEW ENTERPRISE
TOBACCO PLANTING BEGUN CUBING BAIWS GOING UP. Three months ago it was announced that the Government intended to give a guarantee of £3500 on tobacco shipped abroad during the coming season, provided that the tobacco in question was grown under the .supervision of a Horticultural Department inspector. To this position Mr C. E. Lowe was appointed, and to-day the first plantings of tobacco for export are being made in the Nelson district. Recent reports by Mr Lowe state
that the seedlings are being taken from their beds and are being planted permanently. The weather conditions have been excellent, there having beeu a shower of rain almost every day. Preparations are being made for the erection of curing barns at Motuekn, and theso will be ready in ample time for the storage of the leaf. The whole of the crop will be harvested in March and April; most of it will have ripened bv the end of February, will be dried and shipped away. it is now learned that the Tobacco Growers’ Association intends to arrange shipment- of the leaf through the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ V'e do ration, and the Government gun ran tee will be iu the direction of granting
the prowers Accommodation during this period. The tactual handling and shipment of the produce will he arranged hv the f/ovrcrs thcmselres, witfc the assistance and advice of the Hojfe tieulturnl Department.
