POLLOCK STARS NGAROMA CLUB DEFEATS CHALLENGERS By “ROQUET” Ngaroma Club being the holders of the Pollock Stars were challenged by the Khandallah Club for them, the game being played on the Ngaroma lawn, but were successful in retaining them. Mesdames Smith and Tregear represented Ngaroma and Mesdames Living and Kember played for Khandaliah. Tho weather was rather cold and wintry, and not at all conducive to good croquet. Ngaroma won the toss, and Mrs Smith played red to between the first and second hoops. Mrs Living fired to the right line with black, and was followed by Mrs Tregear with yellow. Mrs Kember aimed for them from B baulk, but missed. Yellow then took the turn off black, crossed to red and drove both balls to the first hoop, hut baulked. Black played with blue and scored off yellow at the first hoop. Khandallah 1. A BREAK OF FIVE Made the second hoop with red and ; the next three hoops within a few i minutes of tho start of the game, but broke iown at the sixth (Khandallah 5). Reu to yellow. Black scored again i (Khandallah 6), but could not get a ! ball so went to the line. Red picked up , a long shot, and made the first hoop with blue, then missed. Blue went to black, laying a good double. Yellow hit them, took off to red and rushed it to the first hoop and scored (Khandallah 6, Ngaroma 2), then laid near her partner. Black aimed for red, tried , for position for tho first return hoop but failed, and went to blue. Red tried i for the opponents, a«id scored two ■ points off black (Khandallah 6, Nga- ■ roma 4), failed position for the next hoop and returned to yellow. Black to Blue. Red scored again (Khandallah . 6, Ngaroma 5), but baulked at the next . hoop, and laid near blue who played ■ and scored off black (Khandallah 7, Ngaroma 6), but sent the latter bound- ; ary. I ANOTHER BREAK OF FIVE . Yellow took the turn with black and made a nice break of 5 (Ngaroma 10, [ Khandallah 7) before missing. Blue hit black, made the second hoop, hut laid in the centre of the third. Red to ; yellow. Blue scored (Ngaroma 10, I Khandallah 9), parted the adversaries and returned to black. A BREAK OF FOUR 1 Red got in a long shot, made four points, but laid close to the wire, and could not get the ball (Ngaroma 14, Khandallah 9). Black missed. Yellow played, and in the next two turns scored four points, making the total, Ngaroma 18, Khandallah 9, then laid for red’s turn. Black got a long 6hot in, separated, peeled blue through the hoop, and scored also (Ngaroma 18, Kahandallah 11), so laid near by. Yellow to red. Blue hopped over the black ball, and this misfortune made a considerable difference to the Khandallah players. Y'ellow took red to the hoop and set the rush. Black to blue. Red scored (Ngaroma 20, Khandallah 11), made the penultimate and rover also (Ngaroma 22, Khandallah 11), then laid near yellow. Black missed blue. Yellow played, scored two more in quick succesion, 24-11, then laid for the peg. Blue missed them. Red pegged out. Ngaroma 26, Khandallah 11. Lower Hutt will now play the next challenge, and* will be represented by Alesdames Johnson and Lockett. THE ASSOCIATION FERNS KELBURN STILL HOLDS THEM. This game was played on the Kelburn lawns, which were in excellent condition, but the weather was not of the best variety, and as the game lasted for four hours, it was a test of endurance also, each team being alternately in the lead. The holders, Mesdames Morrah and Pollock, wore challenged by the Ngaroma Club, and Mesdames Warner and Hope represented the latter. Y'ellow and red balls Were selected by the Kelburnites, and Ngaroma’s played with blue and black. Airs Warner opened the scoring by ] making the first hoop with black, followed by yellow, who laid in the centre of it. Black removed yellow, and made two more points (Ngaroma 3), then laid for blue. Red (Mrs Pollock) separated them, wont near yellow, and laid a double, black missed. Red baulked at the noop and laid in the centre. Black to blue. 1 Red scored (Ngaroma 3, Kelburn 1), then parted the opponents and returned to yellow. Blue (Mi’s Hope) got in a fine shot, made the first hoop (Ngaroma 4, Kelburn 1), but baulked at the second, and laid wired from red. Red to yellow. Blue made the hoop (Ngaroma 5, Kelburn 1), then went to her partner. Yellow (Airs Morrah) played a long shot, made the first hoop, but overran the second and returned to red. (Ngaroma 5, Kelburn 2.) Black miss*d. Y'ellow took the turn, and mad* three more points—(s all). Blue missetl. Y'ellow scored again (Kelburn 6, Ngaroma 5), but failed at the next hoop. Black now played, and mnde a break of 3, then set a drive for blue. (Ngaroma 8, Kelburn 6.) Red missed. Blue scored (Ngaroma 9, Kelburn 6), but missed the next hoop, and laid near red, who played over to yellow, then laid for tho next point. Blue missed them. Red made a break of three, and the score rose to 9 ail. Uninteresting play ensued for some time, until black mado a break of 3 (Ngaroma 12, Kelburn 9), and left red on the wire. Red played from baulk, hit the blue ball, then removed black from the penultimate hoop, and went to yellow. Blue scored off yellow (Ngaroma 13, Kelburn 9) went to black, but laid in the hoop. NGAROMA AHEAD. Yellow endeavoured to separate the opponents, put blue through the hoop (Ngaroma 11, Kelburn 9), and scored a point also, but failed at tho next. With bluo close, the latter Dlayed and made a hoop (Ngaroma 15, Kelburn 10) then laid in the middle of the next hoop. Red hit yellow, displaced blue, and scored two points (Ngaroma 15, Kelburn 12), then sent a drive for the next turn. Blue missed. Kelburn took the score to 15—all before breaking down. Ngaroma’s blue ball gradually scored point by point, till they were four points ahead (19 —15). . scored hoop by hoop till it was 19—all. A few minutes later it was 20—all, after which the Kelburnites gradually drew ahead point by point, finely pegging out with 26 points to Ngaromas 20. It was a very strenuous game, and up to the last half-hour’s play either side looked like winning. Island Bay Club is next on the challenge list. HATAITAI CROQUET CLUB NEW LAYVNS OPENED. After long years of waiting, the Hataitai Club has obtained lawns of their own, and they are situated in Ruahine street. These were opened on Wednesday afternoon, by the Alayor and Mayoress (Air and Airs C. B. Norwood), in the presence of a large number of players wud quests of the club. Several councillors were present, also Mr J. G. Mackenzie, superintendent of reserves. Mrs Halliday (president), assisted by Mesdames Ryder (hon. secretary), and Brice (club captain), received the visitors, and after the Mayor had declared the lawns open for the season, the Mayoress played the first ball. Subsequently all present were entertained at afternoon tea. The new pavilion was much admired, and tho convenient interior arrangements are most comfortable and useful. Various competitions were held, and despite the high wind were entered into by the majority of those present. INTER-CLUB MATCHES The first round of inter-club matches have been played, and the following scores were made: A Grade; Kelburn (2) 49, Kelburn (1) 44, Hataitai f. 3, Khandallah 32. Intermediate Grade: YVellington 52, Island Bay 50, Kelburn (1) 50, St. Augustine’s 46, Kelburn (2) 44, Hataitai 39, Ngaroma 38, Lower Hutt 29. B Grade: Wellington 52, Island Bay 52, Ngaroma 52, Lyall Bay 52, Lower Hutt 43, Hataitai 34, Seatoun 32, Eastbourne 21.
