The Makara branch of the British ■ and Foreign Bible Society held its an- , nual meeting on Saturday afternoon, j Mrs Hislop was re-elected president ! and Mrs Bowen was elected secretary, ; Miss Neilsen and Mrs Bowen were ■ elected collectors. Mrs Porter spoke ; upon the work of the society. Mrs j Hislop entertained all present to . afternoon tea, and was warmly thank- ■ «d for her hospitality. A meeting of those interested in the i society was also held on Tuesday nt ! Porirua, when Mrs Morris (secretary) j presided. Mrs Porter was invited to ) adldrcss the meeting, and specially j stressed the growth of the work in ; New Zealand. Airs Stevens and Miss ; Knight entertained all at afternoon j tea, which was greatly appreciated. \ On Wednesday tho annual meeting was | held at Island Bay at the residence of the president (Mrs Vickery). The Rev. L. Thompson presided, and con- j gratulntcd the branch upon its work for tho year. Mrs Porter spoke upon tho distribution of Scriptures. among the children of tho backblooks in New Zealand, and the co-operation of the ministers in this work. Mrs Vickery was elected president, the Bov. h. Thompson paying a high tribute to her steadfastness and zeal. Miss Hood : was elected secretary. Miss Mr- i Gowan vice-president, and several new 1 collectors were enrolled for next year. ] A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs ] Smithers, the retiring secretary. Mrs ; Vickery entertained all at afternoon ten, and was heartily thanked by those present for her hospitality.
