At a meeting of Gladstone farmers last evening the following resolution was'passed:— “That the Government be asked to authorise the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, if that organisation lias not already been empowered to do so, to bear the financial burden of defence against the freezing workers’ present demands.” In tho course of discussion a number of speakers urged that it was unfair that only members of tho Farmers’ Union should be asked to bear the cost of measures of defence. Farmers who were not members of the Union, it was maintained, should be asked to bear their fair share of this burden. It was contended also that townspeople and exporters, whose means of livelihood were threatened by the action of the freezing workers, should likewise be asked to contribute. STARTED WITH~FREE LABOUR Per Press Association. WANGANUI, November 24. Tlie linlay freezing works are carrying on to-day with free labour. Twenty butchers have been engaged and more labour is offering than required. The extra men will be put on gradually.
