A FAMOUS SHIP
TOOK FIRST CARGO OF NEW ZEALAND MUTTON A famous ship still afloat under the Norwegian flag is the Canterbury, 1290 tons, built in 1874 for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line by Robert Duncan, of l’ort Glasgow (says a writer on “Famous Ships.”) Originally she was full rigged and engaged in the New Zealand trade. Many years ago, if one remembers rightly in 1878, she was equipped with refrigerated chambers and carried the first cargo of frozen mutton from New Zealand to England. As a matter of fact, she was the first vessel ever to engage in tlie frozen meat trade, and it is n matter of speculation jvhether the term “Canterbury mutton” is in recognition of the old ship and hor services, or merely an allusion to the Canterbury district of the Dominion.
