OLDEST MINE IN EUROPE
The oldest pit in operation in Europe, perhaps in the world, the Desch salt mine in Transylvania, has caved in. Its first shaft was sunk by the Romans in pre-Christian days, and tile mine lias been operated, oil and oft, for more than 2000 years. Through constant exploitations the labyrinthine galleries had under-tun-nelled the whole town of Deseli, and eventually the main shaft collapsed. Fortunately the accident occurred at night time, when nobody" was working underground. Only minor material damage was done to some of the houses near the pithead.
