BREATHING AGAIN
LANG GOVERNMENT TRYING TO POSTPONE ELECTION .MR LOUGHLIN WILL NOT AGREE MR BAVIN DECLARES THAT PREMIER’S BLUFF HAS BEEN CALLED By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. •• (Received November 23, 8.40 p.m.) . SYDNEY, November 23. Having survived the censure motion, the State Government is making a desperate effort to stave off the elections until Parliament has run its full term. One Minister said this may be accomplished by conceding Mr Loughlin’s demands for the abandonment of the raid on the Main Roads Board’s funds and dropping the proposed publications tax. Mr Loughlin states, however, that his firm determination is to force an election within four months. Mr T. R. Bavin, Leader of the Opposition, reviewing the position, said that, in spite of the inexplicable action and the extraordinary somersault of Mr Loughlin and his friends, everyone will regard the position as satisfactory. It has disclosed that Mr Lang’s efforts to abolish the Upper House without an appeal to the people has been finally defeated, while his lamentable Budget proposals for the taxation of newspapers and an increase of freights to be paid by the country producers has been abandoned. “Most important of all,” added Mr Bavin, “we, at the point of the bayonet, have secured an early election.”
