WICKET CHARGES

NO INCREASE THIS YEAR BIGGER CHARGE IN FUTURE. At the meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association last night the chairman, Mr C. G. Wilson, asked members if they had anything to say on the subject of the proposed increase in the practice wicket charges at the Basin Reserve. The chairman said the committee all supported the matter at the time, but on looking at it again perhaps it was not quite fair to let them take up the wickets and then increase the charges. Mr C. Drummond said the clubs had been getting wickets in town for some years about £2 cheaper than the suburban clubs. Midland Club had a balance of about £l4 after paying its dues to the association, and a club could not run itself on that sum without getting subscriptions, and Midland Club should endeavour to get citizens interested from a vicepresident’s point of view. Mr 11. J. Buck agreed that the charge was quite a lair one, but it should have been done prior to the beginning of the season, so that clubs could have arranged their finance. Mr Drummond suggested that some clubs fvere able to make a lower member’s subscription owing to the smaller charge, and he thought the association should consider making a uniform subscription for senior clubs. Mr Buck: It was rather like letting a horse to a fellow, and as he is comfortably settled you tell him you are going to jump up the rent. Mr A. Ronaldson: It is often done though, (daughter.) Mr Buck: I suppose it is. Mr W. M. McGirr said he understood there were others ready to take up the wickets if any fell out. On the motion of Mr D. McKenzie, seconded by Mr Ronaldson, it was resolved that the additional fee for the practice wickets at the Basin Reserve be not charged this season, but that for next season and for future seasons the charge be £5 per wicket.
