SANDERS CUP

FIRST TRIAL RACE WIN FOR PEGGY CLOSE FINISH IN LIGHT BREEZE The first trial race for the selection of the' Wellington candidate lor the Sanders Cup was held on the harbour last evening when three fourteenfooters turned out. Peggy, which was sailed under an entirely new skipper in the veteran yachtsman from Paremata, Mr A. Sterling, registered a close win from Wellesley, with All Black a very close third. Only 22 seconds separated the three boats when crossing the line. The harbour was fairly choppy under a moderate nor’-nor’-west breeze, but later the wind dropped and the boats had difficulty in filling the extra canvas which was piled on Tor tlie run home. Wellesley was sailed under Mr B. White, and All Black was piloted by Mr A. G. Crawford. Tho course was from a point between Taranaki street wharf mid Clyde quay wharf, along to Point Jerningham, around Coromandel buoy, and back to starting point. Peggy had a few yards start on the other two boats when starter G. G. Groves dropped tho flag at 6.1 p.m., and the three yachts started on an almost close haul up to Jcruingliam. Peggy retained a fairly good lead, and when the Kiosk at Oriental Bay was passed she was about forty yards ahead of Wellesley, and All Black a further 20 yards behind. Peggy was fir.M around the buoy, with Wellesley 30 seconds after, and All Black a further 40 seconds away. All boats carried well into tho wind before going about, Wellesley being first from All Black and Peggy to go on the starboard tack in the beat up to the Coromandel buoy. Wellesley and All Black made several sin rt-boards on the beat up. while Pcggv kept on the same beard, losing a little when nearing the turning point and just failing to round the buoy without having to take another short board. She was around the buoy three minutes and ten seconds ahead of Wellesley, however, wlien All Black was only ton seconds further back, both the last-named boats having trouble through the wind dropping just as they reached , tlie bouy. All three raised their spinnakers, but the wind became very patchy and slow progress was made for some time. All Black securing an advantage on Wellesley by letting her spinnaker sky up when Wellesley lost her spinnaker sheet while crossing it OYer. Peggy in the meantime kept in the lead, and crossed the line 20 seconds ahead o f Wellesley, which in the run home had lost second pln-ce to All Black and regained it iust before the line was mossed. All Black was but two seconds after her.

The finish was quite exciting, and although the weather was light and suitable for Peggy, she was handled exceptionally under her new skipper. The times were:—Pcggv. Ghr 49min 20sec; Wellesley. 6br 49min 40sec; All Black. Oilr 49min 42sec.

The next trial will be raced to-mor-row evening.
