HUNTING THE PRINCE

NEW YORK SOCIETY FAMILY CORNELIUS VANDERBILT’S STORY 1 ■ » SAYS HIS COUSIN WAS “SOLD” By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. NEW YORK, November 21. Cornelius Vanderbilt, junior, in a copyrighted article in the “New York American” to-day, says that his cousin Consuelo was “sold by the hierarchy, better known as the Four Hundred, in which her parents were dominant factors,” to the Duke of Marlborough, the annulment of whose marriage with Consuelo Vanderbilt by the Catholic Church recently created an international stir. He says: “It is no family secret now to tell that Consuelo, when forced to marry the Duke of Marlborough, was in love with an American, a handsome young man who later made a name for himself greater than he inherited, am] greater than that of the man she was forced to marry.” Concluding with a condemnation of the penchant of wealthy American families for “princely marriages,” Mr Vanderbilt says: “There is one family in New York which in the past ten years has exerted every effort to form an alliance with the British Crown. If the Parliament in Britain were to set aside a certain ceremony required as a precedent for such a marriage, it is possible that a New York girl not so distantly related from the writer would become the future Queen of England.”
