LINKING THE EMPIRE
GREAT BROADCASTING CHAIN RELAYING BRITISH PROGRAMMES AMBITIOUS PLAN OUTLINED Bv Telegraph.—Pres. Assn.—Copyright. Australian an<l N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, November 19. A proposul for an Empire chain of super-broadcasting stations is at present receiving the attention of wireless men and engineers. Though no official sanction is available at the moment, those intimately concerned say that the scheme is likely to commend itself. The estimated cost is £500,000. The work would consist in the erection of eight gigantic stations, working at twice the power of Daventry, which would link up the Empire by means of a combination of wireless and landlines. British programmes could be broadcast to India, South Africa, Canada, and Australia.
It is suggested that the stations might be located .at Moncton (New Brunswick), Vancouver, Fanning Island, Sydney, Perth, Colombo. Bombay, and Malta. Daventry could be the Lumping-off place for tranmission from Britain. In order that stations might receive programmes at suitable times, a 24-hour service woulu be essential. There is also a suggestion by Senatore Marconi that the beam system should supersede existing methods, as this is more economical, thus rendering high power unnecessary. FIJI STATIONS TRANSFERRED SUVA, November 20. The Legislative Council has approved of the transfer of the Fiji wireless stations to the Amalgamated Wireless Company under an agreement for a period of 10 years.
