CHESS
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST' ENIToF DECEMBER. The aniiUi.l tourney to decide the ehess championship of New Zealand for 1927 is scheduled to commence in Auckland on December 27tli. Play is to take place in the spacious room <f the Auckland Chess (.Tub. 42, His Majesty's Arcade. Queen street. Entries have to reach Mr C. IV. Tanner, hon. secretary <;f tlie New Zealand Chess Association, on or before December Ivt. Earlier in the year Mr S. Ciakanthoru, of Sydney, New South Wales, was under the impression that lie would not be able to get sufficient leave of absence to enablo . him to defend the title that he von so handsomely at Dunedin a year ago. It looks, however, as if he has succeeded in overcoming the difficulty of leave, as tlu l September number of rho Austral” has the following:— “It is not thought that Mr S. Crakanthorp will be a competitor for the New South Wales State championship on this occasion. He is the holder of both the New Zealand and Australian titles, and in view of his defending the former at Christmas time, he might reasonably be expected to re-erve himself for that event.” This is welcome news. At. the last committee meeting of the W'ellington Chess club it was decided to nominate Messrs C. P. Anderson, E. A. Hick?, A. \V. Gyles, and T. Fouhy if they can arrange to make the trip. The chess players of the Wellington Working Men’s Club and Literary institute decided on Saturday evening to nominate -Messrs R. J. Barnes and F. K. Kelling 'fhe former, whose name is a household one in Australasian chess circles by reason of his many triumphs during the past 37 years, is on the sick list at present, but it is hoped that he will be his old self before Boxing Day. The Masterton Chess Club is nominating Mr Paul Kummer, who has put up a fine record in playing at lx>ard 1 in several of his club’s fixtures. Although handicapped by lack of practice lie can be relied on to worthily, continue the high standard formerly set by his illustrious cousin, F. W. Kummer. Mr W. H. S
Hughes, of Ohura, is to make his second bid for the coveted championship on this occasion. His first bid was made at the Wellington congress three years ago, when be showed much promise. The Hamilton Club is sending two sterling players in Messrs Bullock and Fenwick. The latter, it will he remembered, was the only compel itor to score u win from champion Crakanthorjxi at the Dunedin congre*s. a year ago. The South Island contributes four strong candidates in Messrs J. B. Dunlop, of Oamarn f three linns champion oj New Zealand); B. \Y. Stenhou.se (ebaicnjon of tho Otago Cho«s Chib); E. W. Sevcreno (Nelson’s very solid champion); and Rev. A. Miller (a former Auckland champion who is now a, resident of Westport). The Auckland contingent will be very capably led by Mr J. A. Moir (who recently won ihe championship of the Auckland Chess Club for the fifth consecutive year), and Mr D. T. Jones (who has given Mnir a hard run in the last two Auckland tourneys). Other prominent New
Zealand enthusiasts may also be taking part. All doubts regarding the entry l ; st should be cleared up in a fortnight's time. The Auckland Chess Club has appointed a strong committee to cany out this championship tourney, which promises to bo a very sue-
