THE LEVIN MEETING

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE (By ‘‘Carbine.’’) Beautfful weather favoured the Levin Racing Club for its annual gathering on Saturday. Very little rain had fallen there, and the racing track was in perfect condition. The attendance was big. The totalisator receipts fell, but that was expected, as money is scarce. From all points of view the meeting was a great success. The visitors included a party of Parliamentarians, among them the Speaker of the House of Representatives (the Hon. Sir Charles Statham), Hon. W. Nosworthy, Hon. K. F. Bollard. Hon. K. S. Williams, Mr W. H. Field, M.P., Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.. and Mr J. Linklater, M.P. One of the party, Mr W’illiams, is the owner cf Gauntlet, who won the opening event. There was a deal of rough racing during the day, and the stipendiary stewards prosecu.ted numerous investigations, but just before the .close of the day they stated that they had not discovered anything upon which action could be taken. To observers other than the stipendiaries it did not seem that the riders were to blame, but that some of the fields were rather large for the small course. One ef the first considerations of the club ought to be the improvement of the turns.

The cup was won by Diogenes, owned by Mr H. P. F. Blundell, of Wellington, whose success was popular. The chief of the other events, the McDonald Memorial, was won by First Acre, the property of another popular Wellingtonlan, Mr A. Trevor. The totalisator registered £18,573. Last year the sum was £19,504 10s. GAUNTLET WINS HURDLES Matu, with A. McDonald up, was a much better favourite than Gauntlet for the Manakau Hack Hurdles. Tempean, Empire Camp, and Gauntlet led through the straight from Axle and Risk, with Matu, hugging the rails, next. Matu made up ground nicely crossing the top, and half a mile from home was in the lead. Gauntldt vent out after him, and the pair raced together all the way to the last fence, which they cleared on even terms. Gauntlet did best in the run home, and won by a neck. Six lengths away was Tempean, third, just ahead of Empire Camp and Sir Pam. Risk and Salamis lost their riders. Petal was the best backed of the W’eraroa Hack field, and there was big money for Our Jack, Ardfinnan 1 and Gardant. From a good start Sole Mio led along the back from Our Jack, Anchor and Petal. Sole Mio was still in front on the far turn with Our Jack and Anchor together next and Gardant, Petal, Panart and General Wai all well placed. The field closed np at the bottom of the straight, and Our Jack drifted out of the contest.' Anchor stuck on well and lasted long enough to, beat Panart half a length. General Wai was a length away third, and then came Asleep, and Gardant. MAIDEN TO KILMEZZO A good favourite for the Maiden Race, Kilmezzo, scored an easy win and paid a fair price. He was in front after the field had gone a little over a furlong, and led all the way to win by two lengths from Dominion Rose, who beat Molto by half ' a length. Theodolite and. Humoresque were fourth and fifth. The Trentham gelding, Black Mint, was heavily backed for the MakoMako Handicap, but,. after giving a poor display, he failed badly. Lin Arlington was early in the lead, with Take Take, Twinkle, Vivo and Volplane following in strung-out order. There was no important change in the run to the straight, but Vivo and Black Mint slightly improved their positions. Lin Arlington kept liis lead along the straight and won well by a length and a half from Vivo, who finished fast. Twink was a fair third, and Take Take and Black Mint were together next. ROUGH RACE FOR CUP There was some even wagering on the Cup, Hipo, Diogenes, Indian Sage and Ivilfaire all being well supported. Benmure, Misgovern and Diogenes were in front passing the stands, from Nukumai, Rouex, Indian Sage, Hipo, and Penman. Along the hack Benmure was going nicely in front ol Misgovern and Nukumai. llouex was sent back to last, and a little later Benmure went back. Positions changed rapidly, and Diogenes 151 into the straight from Nukumai, Kilfaire, Hipo and Penman. Diogenes .drew away in the straight, and won easily by three lengths from Hipo, who beat liilfaire by half a length. Nukumai, Bonliomme and Penman were the next to arrive. The race was a rough one, and Diogenes owed his success partly to getting clear of trouble in tiqje. Indian Sage and Hipo received bad passages, and Hipo did well to run second. No Favours, backed down to a short price in the Lake Hack Handicap, lost a great chance of winning, but finished well in the straight and was given second money. Conviction led in the early stages from Inoe and No Favours, but along the back No Favours drifted to the rear, and Panart moved up close to the front. Soon after turning for home Asleep and

Panart looked to Have the race between them, but the favourite finished fast. He could not get to Asleep, • who won by a neck, with Panart a head away third. Mountain Star was a close fourth. GOOD WIN BY FIRST ACRE Modern and Epistle were confidently hacked for the McDonald Memorial, and there was ample support for Joy Bird and First Acre. Joy Bird, from a position next to the rails, jumped out smartly, and at once hit the front. Almost immediately she was joined by Star Shell, who went to the front along the back, and led by three lengths from Joy Bird and First Acre, who were a couple of lengths clear of Santonio and Modern. Crossing the top, First Acre left Joy Bird, and went out after Star Shell. The pair entered the straight together. Star Shell came out wide on the final turn, and carried First Acre with him. This left a big opening for anything to get through on the rails, and R. Reed shot Joy Bird through quickly. D. Watts, on Star Area, followed him through. A fine finish ensued, First Acre winning bv half a length from. Star Shell, who lasted only just lona enough to narrowly defeat Joy Bird, while Star Area was right up fourth, and Epistle and Santonio,. who were next, were almost in line with the fourth horse. A good day’s sport concluded with the Hokio Hack Handicap, from which Argue. Note, Polnaise, and Otaurn Eclipse were withdrawn. The Taranaki colt, Jazz Baby, who won at Trentham last month, was made favourite, and there was no lack of support for Royal Game, Starboard Light, and Kilmezzo. Kilmezzo, having won the Maiden earlier in the afternoon, was penalised 51b, |mt a slb allowance was claimed for his apprentice rider, and he carried the 7.3. at which he was originally handicapped. Kilmezzo played up at the post, and lost some ground. The Bolter was first away,

followed by Jazz Baby, Starbird, Royal Land, and Royal Game. Rounding the top bend Jazz Baby was showing the way from The Bolter, Royal Land, Starboard Light, and Kilmezzo. On entering the straight The Bolter. Jazz Baby, Royal Game, and Starboard Light were together. A great finish sawjazz Baby and Kilmezzo pass the judge’s box half a head in front of Royal Land, with Royal Game fourth.
