ATTACKED BY PET DEER While walking on Woodstown beach, County Waterford, a party of five young girls and a boy were attack.;! by a pet deer. The animal jumped on Miss Jlar.v Scanlon, beating her to the ground and injuring her right leg. It then turned on the other members of the party, but Miss Molly Mooney, of Waterford, seized the deer by the horns, and, with the help of the remainder of the party, succeeded in holding it at bay until a number of men arrived and drove it away. Miss Alooney was severely kicked in the body. PENSIONER ROBBED Harvey Bennett (.33), a draper's salesman, was sent to prison for two months iff the second division by the Birmingham magistrates for stealing ;t'7 from an old-age pensioner from whom 110 rented two rooms at Harborne. it was stater! that the pensioner, Mr Walter Barker, received an advance from a building society to buy a house, and 1 that he entrusted the fortnightly pny- ! ments cf £1 each to Bennett. Bcnue'ct used the money to pay the rent of the two rooms. He admitted intercepting letters from the building society. CLOUDS OF MOSQUITOES During a recent afternoon band performance on the Southend Pier in England, a dense cloud of mosquitoes I came in with the tide, and for half an hour smothered the large holiday crowd. 1 Hundreds of people sitting on deckchairs rushed to shelters, and several bandsmen were temporarily placed out of action. Two young women fainted through excitement and pain. FIREMEN ATTACKED BY WASPS While attending a stack fire recentlv the firemen of Peterborough encountered a second enemy with which to battle. The motor-pump was in operation when one of the wheels dropped into a wasps’ nest,. The amazed insects emerged nnd attacked tlic firemen with a will, so much so that seven members of fb ' brigade bad to receive first-aid treatment. One of the giant sequio trees of California. which is lying on the ground and fell manv years ago. was re-er - l Of} ft high, and is 100 ft round at the base.
