CREW’S HEROIC EFFORT
FIGHT AGAINST FLAMES LONDON, November 2. Tho British steamer Faison, which caught fire off the North Foreland, at the mouth of tne Thames, did not sink, as was at first reported. After having drifted all night, while the people of five .Kent resorts looked on, the blazing ship was beached at Deal, midway between the North and South Forelands. The fire began in a carom of matches, which exploded like bombs. Though the decks were buokling under the heat, and the whole ship was filled with choking smoke, the engineers and stokers stuck grimly to their jobs, driving the engines as never before into the teeth of a gale in an effort to beach the vessel. The crew was eventually forced to abandon ship. Among the crew was Robert Edlin, ex-Colonel of the Welsh Fusiliers, who took to the sea after financial losses.
