MINISTERIAL Hie Minister for Public Works (the Hon. K. S.. Williams) returned to Woffington from the South Island yesterday morning. The consecration of the Venerable Cecil Arthur Carrington aa Bishop of Waikato has been definitely arranged for the morning of Sunday, December 12 th. The death has occurred of Mr Alfred E.Verry, a resident of Konini and for many years president of the A. and P. Society, states a Press Association message from Pahiatua. He was prominently connected with farming and other institutions. He had been an inmate of a priyato hospital for the past eight weeks. He was 55 years of age. Mr K. M. Barranee, who was supervising engineer during the driving of the Orongorongo tunnel, and latterly has supervised the work of laying the Orongdrongo-Karori main from the Wainui Valley to the foot of the Waiwetu Hill, has, now that tho work is completed, resigned from the service of the City Corporation, and is returning to the South Island. A Press Association cablegram ieceived from London states that Mr F. W. Filrkert, Engineer-in-Chief of the New Zealand Public Works Department, who has been tcmring the world on visits of inspection on behalf of the Government, leaves London to-day tn route for New Zealand. He will' inspect large jiublic works in France, Egypt, and Java, and will call at Port Darwin and Thursday Island. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year at last night’s annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Architects: —Chairman, Mr Stanley W. Fearn (re-elected); vice-chairman, Mr G. H. de J» Clere; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr E. W. G. Coleridge; committee, Messrs W. M. Page, W. Creighton. A. S. Mitchell, F. E. Greenish, A. B. Hamilton, S. Nntusch and V. P. Haughton.

The friends of Captain W. H. Cottroll, C.M.G., 0.8. E., R.N.V.R., will regret to learn that he passed away at an early hour on the 18th instant in a private nursing home, after a short illness. The late Captain Cottrell served in the Gallipoli campaign, and was the recipient of a number of foreign decorations, including the Legion d’Honneur. Captain Cottrell was a visitor to New Zealand, being bis second within the past two years for the purpose of being near his daughter, Mrs M. L. A. Axworthy. Mr James Scott, foreman of the boiler shops at the Petone Railway Workshops, who is retiring after 31 years’ service, was made a presentation at the shops yesterday. Mr E. P. Walworth, workshops foreman. :n making the presentation on behalf of the referred to the high esteem and affection in which Mr Scott was held by them all, and he was seconded in his remarks by Messrs G. Hogg (boiler shop). W. H. Edward (Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants), and J. McDougaff (Railway Tradesmen’s Association). The gifts were a pair of field glasses for Mr Scott, and a silver teapot for Mrs Scott. Practically all the employees at the workshops were present, as well as officers of the department, and Mr Scott was heartily cheered when he ie> pliod.
