HAMILTON-AUCKLAND RACE HELLIER, OF NEW~PLYMOUTH, WINS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, November 18. The 100-mile cycling road race from Hamilton to Auckland resulted: — C. Hellier (New Plymouth), 30min, shrs 42min 30 4-ssec 1 C. H. Jennings (Palmerston North), 30min, shrs 48min 35 l-osec ... 2 A. C. Taylor (Auckland), 30min, shrs 48min 52sec 3 A. Sutherland (Auckland), 12min, shrs 40min (fastest time) 4 J. Henderson (Auckland), 15min was fifth, and R. Healey, 70min, sixth. There were 26 starters. The scratch men, S. McCann (New Plymouth) and R. Lasky (Christchurch) forfeited the engagement, and other scratchings left Sutherland the scratch man. The weather was fine, and the roads were in good order, with a few bad patches. Hellier, Jennings, and Taylor, all on the same mark, kept together practically throughout the race, and overhauled the limit men in the last 30 miles. Hellier drew away, to win by about six minutes, from Jennings, with Taylor, close up, third.

PRIZE-MONEY WITHHELD

VNFAIR tactics alleged SOME RIDERS TOWED BY CARS. Later. An official statement to-night gives Hellier fastest time in the race, shr 42min 30 2-ssec. J. Harcourt is placed fourth, and Sutherland fifth. Sutherland’s time is given as 6hr 2min 35 l-ssec. The starter, Mr G. Sutherland, said the prize-money would not be awarded until the officials were satisfied that all the riding conditions had been observed by competitors. He said it had been alleged that some of the cyclists were towed by motor-cars at certain points, and that there were other incidents which needed investigation. He was passing Whangarata in the official car when a resident informed him that some riders had been towed past behind a motor-car. He himself had seen one rider step from a car and ride away when the official cat approached.
