Tho Transportation Division of tho P United States Department of Commerce , has issued a statement dealing with the world’s, shipping position, from which , tlie following'is extracted:— ? “Conditions throughout the world as ' at July Ist, compared with those a year i ago, were summarised as follows Idle 3 steam shipping was considerably loss, full cargo freights in general were somc- . what lower, shipping in existence was . slightly greater, overseas trade appeared to be about the same in volume, shipi building declined, and there was no ma* f terial change in the sale value of t ships. “The steam shipping laid up in tlx© , principal maritime countries of the world on July Ist, 1926, aggregated about 6 086,000 gross tons, an increase of 241,000 r tons over tho total on January Ist of \ this year. “In the United States tlicro was a reduction of 363,000 tons during the six \ months preceding Jul.v Ist, 1920, but this t fall was more than offset by the rise in tho United Kingdom, which amounted to i 613,000 tons, or more than UK) per cent. “An important development took place t m the employment of privately owned j American shipping during tho past fiscal | year in that nioro than a half-million gross tons of steamers and motor vessels t wore added to tho active sea-going flco.t. i General cargo carrier represented the bulk of the addition, with relatively small increase in pacsengcr ships nnd i tankers. “Tlicro was a decline, however, in the , employment of Government shipping, . which totalled somewhat less than 250,000 , gross tons. Thus tlie net increase in active American shipping on July Ist, , 1926, compared with a year earlier, was . around 250,000 gross tons. , “Full cargo freight rates in genernl declined sharply during tli© first half * of 1926, according to tho index numbers i compiled by the Transportation Division. The first and second quarters of this year witnessed recessions to 94 and * 89 per cent, respectively, of tli© 1911-1918 average, as against 103 and 96 per cent. , in tho corresponding periods of 1925, and against 98 and 99 per cent, ip the third and fourth quarters of that year.” OTAKI~I)UE FRIDAY.
